[April 06, 2013]  DETROIT (AP) -- A person briefed on the matter says electric car maker Fisker Automotive will lay off a large number of workers at its California headquarters on Friday.

The Anaheim-based company has struggled with financial and production problems, and its co-founder resigned last month. In March, Fisker furloughed its staff of about 220 for one week. At one time the company employed about 600 workers.

The person briefed on the layoffs says they will be effective at 8 p.m. Pacific time but didn't say how many there would be.

The person did not want to be identified because a formal announcement hasn't been made.

Fisker makes the $100,000 Karma, a plug-in hybrid sports car. It's sold about 1,800 of them but stopped production last year. Fisker has received $193 million in U.S. government loans.
