 National police spokesman Brig. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said Friday that Basri, 36, fled from his house in the Central Sulawesi town of Poso last week. The guard who escorted him to the house had left Basri unguarded for several hours.
Basri, who like many Indonesians uses a single name, was sentenced to 19 years in jail in 2007 for the beheadings and series of attacks that terrorized Poso, where a Muslim-Christian conflict killed at least 1,000 people between 1998 and 2002.
The guard who escorted him is being questioned.
Indonesia has won praise for arresting and convicting terrorists since the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.
