Friday afternoon was Senior
Citizens Day at the Logan County Fair. The annual event is
sponsored by Symphony of Lincoln.
The afternoon included bingo
and musical entertainment by the Don Smith Band, along with
refreshments.
Don
Smith's group has been at the fair since 1959 entertaining with some
really smooth big-band music. You know, the type that keeps you
feeling young, tapping your toe and feeling like everything is right
in the world.
Don started playing as a sophomore here in Lincoln. His first
big-band gig was in Bloomington at the Eagles. The name of that band
was the Nu-Notes. In 1957 he started Star Dust, which was a rock
'n' roll band. He played jazz for a short time before returning to
his beloved big-band music in 1974. They have had two CDs, played on
four
cruises, and Smith says he feels like he
has done it all.
