Sunday evening the 77th Logan
County Fair came to an end with the demolition derby.
This year there were several
cars entered in four classes. Modifieds ran in two
heats, followed by compacts and stock. In addition, a
consolation heat ran before the final feature.
The evening began with local
vocal artist Lesleigh Bennett singing the national anthem. The Logan County Fair board secretary spoke a few words, followed by Logan County Fair Queen Crystal Quint and Little Miss Logan County
Celia Cross each wishing the drivers good luck.
Each event was packed with
die-hard drivers and cars that kept the action going for quite some
time. In the final feature, it was a long battle before Ryan
Willis finally won out over Jason Melton
Results for all classes are as
follows:
Modified: 1. Ryan Willis; 2. Jason Melton; 3. Rick Dobbels; 4. Blake Neeley
Stock: 1. Cliff Summers; 2. Daniel Rogers
Compact: 1. Rick Lingo; 2. Brad Whiteman; 3. Jordan Gesner
During the course of the
evening there were a few small fires that brought the Lincoln
and Lincoln Rural firefighters to the rescue.
There were no injuries in the fires. The Lincoln Rural Fire
Protection District Young Explorers worked the grandstand, selling
50-50 tickets, and there was a fundraiser for Punk O'Donoghue. The raffle-style fundraiser gave audience members the opportunity
to drive an actual derby car in the stock class competition.
One of the more exciting
events of the evening may have been when one of the cars was pushed
off the track and onto the trailer that was serving as the stage for
the event. No one was injured, and the car was removed from its
perch and came back to compete later in the evening.
