[August 12, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- Indescribable. That is the best word 19-year-old Tyler Gradert of Geneseo could find to express the intense relief and excitement he felt after learning his crossbred barrow had been chosen as grand champion of the 2013 Illinois State Fair.

"There were a lot of good purebreds out there," Gradert said. "I was nervous."

Gradert, who will attend Black Hawk College this fall, has shown hogs for nine years. He said he enjoys the competition because of the people he gets to meet.

His barrow will be sold Tuesday in the Sale of Champions, an auction of the fair's grand champion junior livestock. Gradert said the money he earns that does not go toward college will be split among his family.

Jessica Awe, 18, of Elkhart, drove the reserve grand champion barrow.

Lane Rinderer, 15, of Highland, exhibited the grand champion Land of Lincoln barrow, a Yorkshire.

"It's the greatest feeling in the world," Rinderer said. "It really proves that hard work pays off."

The reserve grand champion Land of Lincoln barrow was exhibited by Codee Schlipf, 17, of El Paso.
