Prairie 55 ride brings bicycle enthusiasts together

[August 26, 2013]  Of the three course choices for the Prairie 55 Bike Ride on Saturday, it was the long course that brought the most people together.

Besides fitness, most riders enjoy the fellowship of riding together, getting out into the fresh air and sunshine, and a better look at the outdoor scenery. The Saturday ride, formally organized by the Y, also provided the enthusiasts with roadside assistance if needed, maps, marked trails and refreshments.

Most of the riders have been riding all season, and some have joined rides in other areas. Michael Graves and his wife, Denise, had just gotten back from biking in Montana and did several other long rides in other areas this summer.

Another couple came over from Athens to ride the Logan County countryside and to meet other riders.

The 20- and 30-mile country courses offered the great rural scenery of northern Logan County, including the town of Union, with its quaint interurban railroad station, the covered bridge of Skunk Hollow and wind turbines.

On hand to sign in and welcome the riders on the beautiful morning were Chris Cicci, YMCA sports and activity director, and Jan Schacht, executive director.
