Illinois history conference offers new ideas and subjects for teachers

Sept. 26-27 workshops on Lincoln, Hemingway, historic maps

[August 29, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- The upcoming Conference on Illinois History offers great opportunities for teachers who want new ideas on bringing history to life for their students.

The Sept. 26-27 conference offers workshops on a wide array of historical topics, including:

• Using the movie "Lincoln" to teach about Abraham Lincoln.

• Teaching the Gettysburg Address, which will mark its 150th anniversary in November.

• The life and work of Ernest Hemingway, a literary giant from Illinois.

• Exploring antique maps to discuss history and geography.

The conference also includes a two-part workshop about the National Register of Historic Places. Part one explains the register and what properties can qualify. Part two explains the process of getting a building placed on the prestigious list.

The 15th annual Conference on Illinois History takes place at Springfield’s Prairie Capital Convention Center and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Tickets are now available through the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum website, www.presidentlincoln.illinois.gov. To register, click on "Special event tickets and reservations." The price is $90 to attend both days and $50 for a single day. Students can attend the full conference for just $40.
