[December 03, 2013]  CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago police say there is a chance the city could end the year with the fewest number of homicides since 1965.

The department says there were 94 fewer homicides in the first 11 months of 2013 than recorded for the same period in 2012. There were 380 homicides through November of this year. Last year, there were 474 homicides through the end of November and 503 for the year.

The number of shootings in 2013 has also fallen, with police saying there were 1,712 in the first 11 months of the year compared to 2,291 for the same period in 2012.

After last year's surge in violence, the department launched a crime fighting effort initiative that included paying more officers overtime to patrol some of the city's most dangerous neighborhoods.
