New projector debuts at Arlee grand reopening Friday

[December 10, 2013]  MASON CITY — After a two-week closure, the Arlee Theater will reopen Friday to debut its new digital projector, paid for in part by donations from supporters of the Arlee Theater.

"When the community and surrounding area stepped forward with financial help for the Arlee, we wanted to answer their pledge of support by moving forward and purchasing the digital projector that is crucial to remaining open," said Arlee owner John Maxson. "Now we hope patrons will continue to show that support by buying movie tickets so we can keep the business operating and the building warm."

The Arlee's 77-year-old Simplex projector has been replaced by a state-of-the-art third-generation NEC 900 digital projector that offers a high-definition image and superb surround sound.

"Now that we have gone digital, we won't have to wait in long lines for the few 35 mm movies available, and we'll be able to book the movies everyone is asking for," said Gaye Maxson, who co-owns the nonprofit theater with her husband.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" is scheduled for Dec. 13-16, to be followed by the family movie "Frozen," running Dec. 20-30.

The price tag on the new projector is $43,000. Various fundraising events and generous donations have brought in over $30,000 so far.
