John Welsh

[February 12, 2013]  LINCOLN -- John P. Welsh, 66, of Lincoln, died Sunday, Feb. 10, at 6:53 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Lincoln – John P. Welsh, 66, of Lincoln, died Sunday, February 10, 2013, at 6:53 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Visitation will be Thursday evening 4-8 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church.

Funeral services for Mr. Welsh will be held on Friday, February 15, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Lincoln. Father George Pyle will officiate.

Burial will be at New Union Cemetery in Lincoln.

Surviving Mr. Welsh are his wife, Mitzie, of Lincoln; his children: Brittney Welsh Peterson of Sherman, J.D. Welsh of Mary Esther, Fla., Deamonda Welsh of Lincoln and Peter Welsh of Lincoln; five grandchildren: Soren Welsh, Rhiannon Peterson, Erin Peterson, Cassidy Rose Welsh and Ava Grace Welsh.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

John Paul Welsh was born July 2, 1946, in Olney, Ill., the son of Glen and Mildred Stanford Welsh. He married Mitzie Sharos on May 22, 1982, in Springfield. She survives.

Mr. Welsh graduated from Clay City High School in 1964. He then graduated from Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky.

He taught at the Beason Elementary and High School until they consolidated with Lincoln Community High School. He retired in 2001 after teaching for 34 years.

He coached baseball, basketball, and track at Beason High School from 1972 - 1975.

Funeral Director

He coached at Lincoln Community High School from 1975 - 2001 in the following sports: basketball from 1975 - 1984, 1988 - 1995, football in 1986, boy's golf from 1975 - 1982 & 2001, girl's golf from 1995 -1996, boy's swimming in 2001, boy's track from 1975 - 1982 & 2001, and girl' track from 1987 - 1991.

He was instrumental in creating the Lincoln Jr High Shoot - Out Basketball Tournament.

He was a member & on the board of St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church in Springfield. He is a board member for District # 27 School, Illinois High School Association for Basketball, and a PGA Member. He was also a member of Lincoln Elks Lodge # 914 where he was the current Exalted Ruler.

Memorials may be made to the Lincoln Elks # 914 Veterans Fund, YMCA Partner with Youth, or Lincoln Park District Youth Sports Fund.
