5 area students go to individual wrestling state championship

[February 18, 2013]  Five wrestlers from three schools represented the Logan County area at the Illinois High School Association individual state tournament over the weekend.

Events were over a three-day period, with preliminaries beginning Thursday and championship matches on Saturday at the Assembly Hall in Champaign.

Class 2A

Lincoln Community High School

  • 182 pounds -- Conner Schmidt was defeated in preliminaries by Jake Turk, Lombard (Montini), fall, 1:27.

Class 1A

Stanford Olympia

  • 182 pounds -- Garrett Kelson, Stanford (Olympia), defeated Dexter Fierro, Wilmington, dec., 3-1, in preliminaries.
    In quarterfinals Jacob Klein, Savanna (West Carroll), defeated Kelson, dec., 5-4.
    Winning his wrestle-back against Colt Brummer, Toledo (Cumberland) (Co-op), dec., 11-4, Kelson took fifth place in the state championship.

  • 170 pounds -- Michael Rathbun, Stanford (Olympia), defeated Tyler Godden, Toledo (Cumberland) (Co-op), fall, 3:02, in preliminaries.
    In quarterfinals Rathbun was defeated by Sean Liaromatis, Wilmington, dec., 4-3.
    In wrestle-back Rathbun was defeated by Sean Ward, Winnebago, dec., 9-6.

  • 195 pounds -- Sam Donovan, Stanford (Olympia), was defeated in preliminaries by Mitchell Barna, Shelbyville, dec., 9-6.

Warrensburg-Latham

  • 285 pounds -- Michael Behrends defeated Kolton Koch, Clifton (Central) (Co-op), fall, 1:08, in preliminaries.
    In quarterfinals Morgan Supergan, Bismarck (B.-Henning), defeated Behrends, fall, 3:26.
    In first-round wrestle-back Adam Freimund, Harvard, defeated Behrends, fall, 3:37.

The dual team state tournament begins Saturday.
