Saturday play at the Logan County junior high tournament

[January 07, 2013]  The seventh-grade Logan County Conference tournament got under way over the weekend. Although West Lincoln-Broadwell is the host school, all games this year are being played at Jack D Nutt arena on the campus of Lincoln College.

In the first game, the fourth-seeded Wolverines defeated the fifth-seeded Stags of Hartsburg-Emden 17-16. Jack Eimer led all scorers with 12 points. Payton Batley added three, while Will Tiffany had two in the victory. Alex Vetter led the Stags with six points

In the second game, the No. 3 seed, Carroll Catholic/Zion/NH-M, pulled an upset, defeating the second-seeded Bruins of Mount Pulaski by a final of 50-38. Braden Brown led all scorers with 19 points and Clayton Dixon scored 13, while Cole Klockenga added 10 and Drew Singleton had seven for the Crusaders. Mount Pulaski was led by Seth Huff with 15 points and Payton Taylor had 14.

In the nightcap, the No. 1-seeded Panthers of Chester-East Lincoln held off the fourth-seeded Wolverines 28-19. Josh Vinson had 11 points in the victory for the Panthers, while Jordan Jacobs added 10, Will Ewald scored four and Sam Birnbaum added three. Jack Eimer led the Wolverines in the loss with 11 points, while Payton Batley had six. 

The tournament action resumes Thursday, beginning at 6 p.m. with the third-place game featuring the Mount Pulaski Bruins versus the West Lincoln-Broadwell Wolverines. The championship game featuring the Carroll Catholic Crusaders versus the Panthers of Chester-East Lincoln follows at 7:15 p.m.
