Flu contagion continues to increase; protect yourself and your family

[January 08, 2013]  Influenza cases continue to rise in our community, and it is important to know how to care for someone who has the flu. Keep the sick person comfortable, and follow recommendations of his or her health care provider. Keep others in the home healthy by washing hands and household surfaces frequently.

• Ensure the sick person takes all medications as directed.

• Put the sick person in a separate space from other members of the household.

• Everyone in the home, including the sick person, should clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub frequently.

The Logan County Department of Public Health has a limited supply of flu vaccines still available. The hours for vaccines at the health department are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. No appointment is required. The influenza vaccine is also available on the HOPE Mobile during its regularly scheduled stops.

The cost of the seasonal flu shot is $25 for adults, $16.75 for children 6 months through 18 years of age who have no health insurance or health insurance that doesn't cover vaccines, and free to those with a Medicaid or Medicare card.
