[July 10, 2013]  Following is a copy of the report submitted by Lincoln Fire Department Chief Mark Miller to the Lincoln City Council in June for the month of May 2013:

Emergency and fire related activities

Emergency runs for May 2013 included the Lincoln Firefighters responding to 199 alarms; 1 structure fire, 5 kitchen cooking fires, 2 gas line leaks, 3 service calls, 9 motor vehicle accidents, 8 alarm activations and 1 elevator malfunction rescue request.

Non-Emergency activities

Lincoln Fire Department is preparing for summer time activities. With no public pool Lincoln Fire has once again been requested to cool off those hot kids in a few of the city parks. June 29th at Washington (Fountain) park 1:00, July 4th Lincoln Park District 11:00 a.m., Melrose Park July 20th 1:00 and Apex park at the sight of the old ALMH July 27th 1:00.

Fire Inspectors have been inspecting and conducting follow up inspections at; Glass House, Alley-Bi, Zero Tolerance, Chads Blind, Lincoln Christian University, Sysco, Hardee’s, Coy’s, Goodwill and Holiday Inn. We are preparing for fireworks season and have received permits for Consumer sales. We want to remind citizens that many fireworks are illegal in Illinois and to contact our office if you have any questions. Also new this summer the Office of the State Fire Marshal has issued statements that Sky Lanterns are not legal to use in Illinois. The Inspectors are putting an informational letter to send out to Churches, Banquet Halls and Funeral Parlors to notify them not to allow use for events.

Lieutenants have conducted plan review updates at 1000 N College Apartments, Century Building, Brainard's Landing, Sears, Family Video, Pizza Hut and Thornton’s on Keokuk

Firefighter Training

Lincoln firefighters trained and tested fire hose for the month of May. Throughout the month of May the department tests all fire hose and clean all fire apparatus which are inspected and approved by the Fire Chief. During hose testing 150’ of 1-3/4" hose failed and shall be replaced 250’ of 2-1/2" hose failed and 100’ of 5" hose failed.

Maintenance of the station and apparatus

Station repairs: A new LED emergency light bar was placed on Rescue 5100 due to the electrical draw on the truck and the fact that half the bar was not working properly. Flowers were planted around the station and City Hall.

Safety Tip: Summer time is here use caution when cooking outdoors, don’t use grills in garages or under porch roofs and make sure propane tanks have hoses secured and inspected for cracks before use.
