"This is a very tough business. The day-to-day challenges of keeping revenues ahead of costs remain monumental," said Tony Tyler, IATA's Director General and CEO. He said most airlines earn about $4 for every passenger carried. Profit margins are expected to be 3.4 percent worldwide, the highest level since 2010. The biggest margins are expected for Asia-Pacific airlines at 5 percent, followed by 4.2 percent for airlines in North America, and 1.3 percent for those in Europe. The group said freight revenue would rise 1.5 percent, after falling for the last two years. It expects freight yields to fall 2 percent this year after dropping 6.3 percent last year.
