[June 04, 2013]  DETROIT (AP) -- General Motors Co. says its May sales were the strongest since September of 2008.

The company says sales rose 3 percent over May of last year on strong demand for pickup trucks, small cars and SUVs.

GM says it sold almost 253,000 vehicles last month. Demand for the Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup rose 25 percent to more than 43,000. Truck sales continue to grow on rising demand from home builders and other businesses.

GM also saw double-digit increases for small cars, including the Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze and the Buick Verano.

Cadillac brand sales were up almost 40 percent, GMC sales rose 7 percent and Chevrolet grew just under 1 percent. Buick sales were down 3 percent.

Sales of the Chevy Tahoe SUV were up 29 percent.
