Actor Courtney B. Vance read remarks honoring each inductee at Tuesday's ceremony at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola in New York City. The ceremony featured performances by trumpeters Wynton Marsalis and Roy Hargrove, vibraphonists Joe Locke and Warren Wolf and other guests of such tunes as Hampton's theme "Flyin' Home."
Blakey led the hard bop Jazz Messengers, a training ground for future jazz stars including Marsalis. Hampton rose to fame in Benny Goodman's integrated 1930s quartet. Terry inspired Miles Davis and played in the Count Basie and Duke Ellington big bands.
Inductees were chosen in worldwide balloting by jazz fans from nominees selected by a committee of musicians and scholars.
