Kyle Stanton drove in five of those runs, thanks to a 3-for-3 effort
to go along with a walk and two runs scored in the 10-run victory.
Daniel Dwyer also drove in a pair of runs on a couple of hits, and
Zac Johnson added a pair of hits and scored three times for the
Redbirds.
ISU reliever Matt Schmitt (1-0) picked up his first win, in
relief of ISU starter Will Headean, after allowing just one run in
two innings of work. IWU starter Matt Conrad (1-2) was saddled with
the loss, after allowing six runs and walking three in just
one-third of an inning pitched. In total, Titan pitching surrendered
13 earned runs and 13 walks, hit four batters, and had five wild
pitches on the night.
The Titans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, after Kevin Callahan
hit an opposite-field two-run home run over the left-field wall in
the top of the first inning. That lead would not last long, as the
Redbirds answered with six runs on three hits and an error in the
bottom half of the frame to take a 6-2 lead. Stanton and Dwyer each
had two-run singles in the inning, and Paul DeJong scored when Chad
Hinshaw was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
The Redbirds furthered their lead in the bottom of the second
inning, scoring three runs on three hits with RBI singles from Mike
Hollenbeck and Brett Kay. ISU tacked on one more run in the third
inning on an RBI double to left field off the bat of Stanton, which
scored Johnson from first base.
[to top of second column] |
In the top of the third, the Titans scored two more runs on a
walk, two errors and a double to right by Nick Hahn. In the
bottom of the inning, ISU struck back by scoring three runs on a
pair of hits. Hinshaw scored the first run when he came home
from third base on a wild pitch, and Stanton drove in a pair of
runs later in the inning to increase the score to 13-4.
The Titans got one run back in the top of the fifth inning on an
RBI groundout by Hahn, but ISU answered with a run in the bottom
half when Brock Stewart scored from third on a wild pitch. ISU
didn’t score in the sixth, the only inning when the Redbirds didn’t
push a run across, but put the game away with an RBI single by
Johnson in the bottom of the seventh inning to invoke the 10-run
rule.
ISU will return to action Wednesday, hosting Webster at 6 p.m.
