[October 01, 2013]  SPRINGFIELD -- The fourth-grade Railers used great defense and a smash-mouth offense to blank the Springfield Boomers 7-0 at Hope Field in Springfield on Sunday afternoon.

The Boomers received the opening kickoff, but the Railer defense came ready to play, forcing a turnover on downs. The Railer offense then put together their best drive of the game, going 60 yards on seven plays and capping the drive with a Trent Koehler 20-yard touchdown run. Coleman Atkins added the point after on a 3-yard run, putting the Railers up 7-0.

That would be all the offense the Railers would need, but it was hardly easy going the rest of the way against a very good Boomer team. Neither team mounted much of an offensive threat until the end of the first half, when the Boomers used big plays and a couple of Railer penalties to drive the ball to the Railer 15-yard line. The Railer defense again answered the call, as Atkins intercepted a Boomer pass at the 5-yard line to halt the drive as the first half came to an end.

The second half proved to be more of the same, as both defenses controlled the action until late in the game. After a long punt return, the Boomers set up first-and-goal at the Railer 9-yard line. The Railer defense stood strong and turned the Boomers away on four plays, giving the Railers the ball back on their own 3-yard line. After three plays, the Railers were forced to punt the ball away, but a Boomer player fumbled the ensuing punt and Hayden Gellner recovered the fumble to seal the victory for the Railers.

Offensively for the Railers, credit has to be given to the entire offensive line, as they were able to get a consistent push against the largest defensive front they have seen all season. While lacking explosive plays, the offense was able to grind out 4 and 5 yards at a time to control the clock and the game. Andrew Cline, Tony Gandolfi, Gabe Work, David Hurley, Dahylon Kusnerik, Hayden Gellner, Devon Brady and Kylen Baker all blocked well upfront for the Railers, along with wideouts Drew McCray and Jamison Carter blocking on the edge.

The Railer defensive performance was keyed by middle linebacker Tony Gandolfi and defensive tackle Marco Power, who each had six tackles to lead the defense.

The Railers, now 3-3 on the season, take on Clinton on Wednesday night under the lights of Clinton High School.
