Petry, Jones score in 3rd as Oilers beat Canadiens

[October 23, 2013]  MONTREAL (AP) -- Jeff Petry and Ryan Jones scored in the third period to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 4-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.

Ales Hemsky and Ladislav Smid also scored for Edmonton, while Devan Dubnyk made 29 saves.

Tomas Plekanec, Brendan Gallagher, and Brian Gionta scored for Montreal. Carey Price stopped 28 shots.

After Plekanec and Gallagher gave Montreal a 2-0 lead in the first period, Edmonton scored four consecutive goals to take control.

Hemsky and Smid scored 2:47 apart in the second period to tie it. Hemsky scored the first at 12:50, getting around Alex Galchenyuk with ease and beating Price above the shoulder. Smid then tied it with his first of the year when he put the rebound of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' shot into a gaping net at 15:37.

Petry put Edmonton ahead for good at 7:59 of the third. Nugent-Hopkins pretended to shoot on a 2-on-1, but instead passed the puck to Petry who scored from close range.

Jones made it 4-2 nearly 2 minutes later.

Gionta scored a late consolation goal for the Canadiens with 2 seconds left.

Edmonton improved to 2-3-1 during a six-game road swing. The Oilers return home to host Washington on Thursday before road games at Phoenix and Los Angeles this weekend.

Plekanec put the Canadiens on the board first when he scored a power-play goal at 16:36 of the first period.

Andrei Markov started the play, showing great vision with a diagonal cross-ice pass from the blue line. Plekanec made no mistake slotting home his fourth goal of the season between Dubnyk's legs.

Gallagher increased Montreal's lead less than two minutes later. Gallagher intercepted a poor clearance by the Oilers' Jones and beat Dubnyk glove-side with a quick wrist shot.

The injury-plagued Canadiens were without injured forwards Max Pacioretty, Brandon Prust and Daniel Briere.

The Oilers were missing star forward Taylor Hall and veteran Ryan Smyth. Hall, who injured his knee on Saturday in the Oilers' win over Ottawa, is expected to be out four weeks. Jones replaced him in the lineup.

The Oilers lost 4-1 to the Canadiens on Oct. 11 in their last home game before the two-week road trip.
