[September 19, 2013]  WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) -- Suburban New York police officers aren't only lifesavers, they're swan savers.

Suffolk County marine bureau officers received an emergency call saying a swan had been found with a fish hook stuck in its bill in a creek in West Babylon, 25 miles east of New York City. There also was some fishing line stuck around the swan's neck.

Officers Pete Conte and Rob Jenkins arrived Wednesday morning but found the water was too shallow for their police boat.

A nearby man loaned the officers his 14-foot Carolina Skiff boat to help them reach the swan.

The officers removed the tangled fishing line, and the bird appeared to be fine.

In police lingo: The swan was treated and released.
