[April 12, 2014]  The National Agricultural Statistics Service released 2013 corn and soybean yields by county on Feb. 20. The state average corn yield was 178 bushels per acre, compared with the 105-bushel average of the 2012 drought. Logan County averaged 198.1 bushels per acre, and Sangamon County averaged 198.2. Menard and DeWitt counties were among a group not having individual county numbers due to acreage being below reportable numbers as an individual county.

Top corn yield counties were Carroll County with 200 bushels per acre, Christian County at 199.8, Sangamon with 198.2, Logan 198.1 and Macon at 192.7. McLean had the top county production for corn with 63,008,000. Production in Logan County was 41,005,000 from 207,000 acres, and Sangamon had 46,584,000 bushels on 235,000 acres harvested.

The 198.1 Logan County yield represents a record yield, surpassing the previous record of 197 set in 2007. These yields represent a strong rebound from the drought-affected yields from last year, when averages were 96.5 bushels of corn per acre in Logan and 131.3 bushels in Sangamon County. The new 10-year average yields are 169.97 for Logan and 175.67 for Sangamon.

The state soybean average yield was 49 bushels to the acre, compared with the 2012 state average of 43. Top counties were DeKalb with 58.4, Piatt at 57.1, Carroll County 56.8, Douglas 56.6, McLean at 56.5, and Logan and Grundy tied at 56.4. The Logan County record yield of 57.6 was established in 2010. Logan County production was 7,162,000 bushels on 126,900 acres. Sangamon County had 55.8 bushels per acre for an average on 140,000 acres. McLean County again led the state in production with 16,115,000 bushels. The new 10-year average yield for soybeans is 52.79 in Logan County and 54.32 in Sangamon County.
