Giants 5, Mets 1
Ryan Vogelsong threw a two-hit shutout in his first career
nine-inning complete game and scored one of San Francisco's three
seventh-inning runs in the Giants' victory over the New York Mets at
Citi Field.
The Giants (59-50) won their second straight after a six-game losing
streak and maintained their lead in the National League wild-card
race. The Mets (52-57) failed to move within three games of .500 for
the first time since June 4.
Vogelsong, whose lone major league complete game and shutout was a
rain-shortened six-inning affair against the Chicago Cubs on May 14,
2011, carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before allowing a
leadoff single to Mets center fielder Juan Lagares.

Phillies 2, Nationals 1
Roberto Hernandez allowed one unearned run in eight innings and
Marlon Byrd hit a tiebreaking home run as the Philadelphia Phillies
beat the Washington Nationals.
Byrd, who played for Washington in 2005-06, broke up a pitchers'
duel when he hit a solo homer to right field with two outs in the
sixth inning against Washington starter Doug Fister to make it 2-1.
It was the 21st homer of the season for Byrd, who has two homers and
10 RBIs in 10 games this season against Washington.

Orioles 2, Mariners 1
J.J. Hardy drove in the tie-breaking run with a sixth-inning single,
and left-hander Wei-Yin Chen earned his career-high 12th win as the
Baltimore Orioles scored a victory over the Seattle Mariners.
The Orioles nearly wasted their scoring chance in that sixth inning.
Third baseman Manny Machado led off with a double and went to third
when shortstop Chris Taylor booted a grounder from center fielder
Adam Jones.
Seattle starter Roenis Elias (8-9) then struck out both designated
hitter Nelson Cruz and first baseman Chris Davis. Hardy, the
Baltimore shortstop, lined a shot into center to drive in Machado
for the 2-1 lead and ended Elias' night.

Tigers 4, Rockies 2
Justin Verlander became a 10-game winner with eight solid innings
and new center fielder Rajai Davis accounted for all four Detroit
runs with a two-run single plus two runs scored in the Tigers'
victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Right-hander Joe Nathan earned his 22nd save with a scoreless ninth
to nail down only the Tigers' second victory in their last seven
games.
Verlander (10-9) gave up three of his eight hits when the Rockies
scored their two runs in the seventh. Seventy of his 101 pitches
were strikes and he didn't walk a batter while striking out five.

Reds 5, Marlins 2
Right-hander Mat Latos, who played his high school baseball in South
Florida, beat his hometown team as the Cincinnati Reds defeated the
Miami Marlins.
Reds left fielder Ryan Ludwick had the game-winning hit for the
second straight day. He had a two-run single in the eighth inning of
the Reds' 3-1 win on Thursday and a two-run double in the sixth
Friday.
Latos (3-3) is now 3-0 in his career at Marlins Park. He allowed
five hits, four walks and one run in seven innings.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 3
Anthony Ranaudo tossed six strong innings in his major league debut,
Dustin Pedroia drove in two runs and the new-look Boston Red Sox won
the opener of a three-game series against the rival New York
Yankees.
Designated hitter David Ortiz and catcher David Ross each had RBI
singles for the Red Sox, who had every starter reach base at least
once in winning for just the second time in their past 10 games.
But this was a far different Boston team than the squad that
stumbled to a 48-60 record one season after its magical run to the
World Series title.
The last-place Red Sox on Thursday turned their attention to next
year in a hurry with a flurry of moves just before the trade
deadline, a mass exodus highlighted by the departures of ace
left-hander and Cy Young candidate Jon Lester and right-hander John
Lackey.

Indians 12, Rangers 2
David Murphy had four hits, Michael Brantley added three and Lonnie
Chisenhall continued his demolition of Texas pitching with a home run as
the Cleveland Indians routed the Rangers at Progressive Field.
Right-hander Danny Salazar (4-4) pitched six innings for the win and
Texas right-hander Jerome Williams (1-1) gave up 10 runs and 13 hits in
four innings to take the loss.
In his last game against Texas on June 9, Chisenhall went 5-for-5 with
three home runs and nine RBI. On Friday night, he was 2-for-5 with a
home run and an RBI.

Angels 5, Rays 3
The Los Angeles Angels rode an early offensive attack and overcame a
shaky ninth-inning performance to pull out a win over the Tampa Bay Rays
at Tropicana Field.
Righty Matt Shoemaker went five innings, allowing three runs (two
earned) on eight hits. The Angels' bullpen took over from there, with
Jason Grilli, Kevin Jepsen, Joe Smith and closer Huston Street combining
for four scoreless innings.
Street ran into serious trouble in the ninth, loading the bases with no
outs, but he struck out the Rays' next two batters and got Matt Joyce to
fly out to nail down his fifth save since joining the Angels.

Astros 3, Blue Jays 1
Gregorio Petit hit his first career home run as the Houston Astros
rallied for a pair of runs against the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen in
their victory at Minute Maid Park.
Petit, the Astros' shortstop, crushed the first pitch of the bottom of
the eighth inning into the seats in left field, turning on an Aaron Loup
(3-3) fastball to provide Houston (45-65) its first lead of the game.
Astros second baseman Jose Altuve followed with a double into the
left-center field gap and a steal of third base before scoring on right
fielder Robbie Grossman's sacrifice fly to right.

Brewers 7, Cardinals 4
The St. Louis Cardinals might have beefed up their starting rotation at
the trading deadline Thursday, but they continued to struggle with other
teams' frontline starters Friday night.
Milwaukee Brewers right hander Wily Peralta stifled St. Louis for the
third time this year and Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright could not match
him as Milwaukee opened a pivotal National League Central series with a
win at sold-out Busch Stadium.
Peralta (13-6) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two runs
while walking four and fanning three. In winning his fourth straight
start, Peralta improved to 3-0 against St. Louis, permitting only three
earned runs in 20 innings.

White Sox 10, Twins 8
Jose Abreu kept on hitting and the Chicago White Sox overcame a pair of
blown leads to beat the Minnesota Twins at U.S. Cellular Field.
Abreu went 3-for-3, extended his career-high hitting streak to 21
straight games and played a key role in a four-run eighth inning that
led to Chicago's 10-8 win for their second straight victory and sixth in
the past eight games.
Including Abreu, seven Chicago hitters had at least two hits in a 17-hit
performance as a team.

Royals 1, A's 0
Sonny Gray turned in his usual stingy work for the Oakland A's on Friday
night.
He was outpitched, though, by Jeremy Guthrie. Kansas City's starter did
not allow a baserunner through the first three innings and worked six
scoreless innings in all as the Royals defeated the A's 1-0 at the
Coliseum on Friday night.
Gray's six-game winning streak ended as Oakland was shut out for the
fifth time this season. (Editing by Mark Lamport-Stokes)
