The Chicago Cubs inflicted more misery on Haren and ended the
Dodgers' season-high streak with an 8-2 victory before 47,900 fans
at Dodger Stadium on Friday night.
"We made way too many mistakes tonight," Dodgers manager Don
Mattingly said. "You know you can't win like that."
The Cubs (46-62) won their fourth game in five contests and defeated
the Dodgers (62-48) for only the second time in their past 11
meetings.
Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks sparked Chicago, allowing two runs (one
earned) on four hits with three strikeouts while issuing only one
walk (intentional) in seven innings. Hendricks (2-1), who pitched
high school ball in nearby Orange County, said he was excited about
facing the Dodgers' lineup and pitching for the first time as a pro
in Dodger Stadium.
"To be honest, you focus more, I would say, when you're pitching
against a really good team," said Hendricks, who bought about 40
tickets for family and friends. "Like I said before, every hitter up
and down that lineup can swing it."
Chicago catcher Welington Castillo said every pitch was working for
Hendricks.
"I think we had a very good plan," Castillo said. "We went hitter by
hitter and we executed the plan. I think that's why he had a lot of
success. We just tried to go in and out and tried to pitch different
for every hitter.
"He executed pitches. He's really smart and he knows what he's
doing. I think all the pitches were working, but we threw a lot of
fastballs in and out. His two-seam working down was the key. The
most important thing is he kept the ball down."
Haren couldn't fall much farther in the dumps. The Cubs jumped all
over the beleaguered right-hander, who lost his fifth straight
start. Haren lasted just 4 1/3 innings and was charged with seven
runs (six earned) on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two,
throwing 93 pitches (63 strikes).
It got so bad for Haren that he was thrown out at first base after
lining a shot to right field.
"It seemed like everything went wrong," Mattingly said.
In addition to the loss, the Dodgers suffered some injuries. Right
fielder Yasiel Puig left the contest before the seventh inning with
mild left hamstring soreness. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez departed
in the bottom of the second with a right knee contusion caused by a
slide at home plate. Both are listed as day to day, though Mattingly
said he had already planned to give Gonzalez a day off on Saturday.

Also, reliever Paul Maholm hurt his knee on a play at first in the seventh
inning. Maholm is scheduled to have an MRI on Saturday.
Things started well for the Dodgers, who scored first. Hanley Ramirez's
grounder to short allowed Dee Gordon, who reached on an infield single
and stole second and third, to score for a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
On the play, Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro fielded the ball and made an
errant throw to second that sailed into right field for an error.
Gonzalez attempted to score from second but was tagged out at the plate
by Castillo.
Cubs third baseman Luis Valbuena led off the second inning with a solo
home run to tie the score.
The Cubs scored three runs in the third inning on center fielder Ryan
Sweeney's RBI single, Castro scoring on a throwing error by right
fielder Matt Kemp and a wild pitch by Haren plating Sweeney.
A hit by Sweeney loaded the bases in the fifth and chased Haren. Chicago
scored three more runs in the inning on a Castillo RBI single and a
sacrifice fly by right fielder Nate Schierholtz. Hendricks lined a
run-scoring single off the cleats of right hander Chris Perez for
another run and a 7-1 Cubs cushion.
NOTES: Dodgers 2B Dee Gordon recorded his 50th stolen base and tied for
the fourth fastest Los Angeles player to reach that plateau, trailing
Maury Wills (twice) and Davey Lopes. ... Chicago LHP Felix Doubront was
added to the roster Friday and placed on the 15-day disabled list with a
left calf strain. Doubront was acquired Wednesday from the Boston Red
Sox. RHP Blake Parker was recalled from Triple-A Iowa to replace
Doubront on the roster. Also, INF Chris Valaika had his contract
selected by the club from Iowa. ... The Dodgers' starting pitchers led
the majors in ERA (3.14), wins (52) and strikeouts (624) before Friday's
game.
