Milwaukee Brewers right hander Wily Peralta stifled St. Louis for
the third time this year and Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright couldn't
match him as Milwaukee opened a pivotal National League Central
series with a 7-4 win at sold-out Busch Stadium.
Peralta (13-6) pitched 6 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and two
runs while walking four and fanning three. In winning his fourth
straight start, Peralta improved to 3-0 against St. Louis,
permitting only three earned runs in 20 innings.
Closer Francisco Rodriguez picked up the final out for his 32nd
save, tying Atlanta's Craig Kimbrel and St. Louis' Trevor Rosenthal
for the league lead.
Cubs 8, Dodgers 2
LOS ANGELES -- Chicago snapped Los Angeles' six-game winning streak
and won its fourth game in five contests with a win at Dodger
Stadium.
Cubs rookie Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs (one earned) on four
hits with three strikeouts and a walk (intentional) in seven
innings. Hendricks (2-1) threw 107 pitches (67 strikes).
The Cubs jumped all over beleaguered Dodgers' starter Dan Haren.
Haren lasted just 4 1/3 innings and was charged with seven runs (six
earned) on eight hits. He struck out three and walked two, throwing
93 pitches (63 strikes). Haren has lost his last five starts.
Right fielder Yasiel Puig left the contest before the seventh inning
with mild left hamstring soreness.
Padres 10, Braves 1
SAN DIEGO -- Tommy Medica hit a pair of two-run homers and had a
career-high five hits, shortstop Everth Cabrera had four hits and
San Diego collected a season-high 20 hits in a rout of Atlanta at
Petco Park.
The Padres, who finished last in most National League offensive
categories -- including runs scored during the first half of the
season -- lead the league in runs scored since the All-Star break.
Padres left-handed starter Eric Stults (4-13) allowed one unearned
run, two hits and four walks in 6 1/3 innings. Stults had lost 10 of
his last 11 decisions.
Royals 1, A's 0
OAKLAND -- Starter Jeremy Guthrie worked six scoreless innings and
outpitched Oakland's Sonny Gray to lead Kansas City to victory at
O.co Coliseum.
Gray's six-game winning streak ended and it was the fifth time
Oakland has been shut out this season, and the eighth shutout thrown
by Royals pitchers.
The game's only run came on a fifth-inning home run by Kansas City's
42-year-old designated hitter Raul Ibanez.
At 66-42, the A's retained the best record in baseball, but watched
the Angels gain another game in the standings. They are one game
behind Oakland in the AL West after a win at Tampa Bay earlier in
the day.
Pirates 9, Diamondbacks 4
PHOENIX -- Pittsburgh shortstop Jordy Mercer had two doubles and
drove in the tie-breaking run in a five-run ninth inning as the
Pirates defeated the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Mercer scored three times and Andrew McCutchen had two hits and an
RBI for the Pirates (58-51), who scored eight runs in the final two
innings. They have won four of six.
Left-hander Tony Watson (8-1) pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the
victory.
White Sox 10, Twins 8
CHICAGO -- Jose Abreu kept on hitting and Chicago overcame a pair of
blown leads to beat Minnesota at U.S. Cellular Field.
Abreu went 3-for-3, extended his career-high hitting streak to 21
straight games and played a key role in a four-run eighth inning
that led to Chicago's second straight victory and sixth in the past
eight games.
Including Abreu, seven Chicago hitters had at least two hits in a
17-hit attack. Tyler Flowers went 2-for-4 with a home run and two
RBIs, Alexei Ramirez went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs, Adam
Eaton went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI and Paul Konerko went
2-for-5 with an RBI-single that tied it 7-7 in the eighth.
Kurt Suzuki led the Twins by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and
rookie Kenny Vargas went 1-for-5 with a two-run double, making his
major league debut on his 24th birthday.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 3
BOSTON -- Anthony Ranaudo tossed six strong innings in his major
league debut, Dustin Pedroia drove in two runs and new-look Boston
won the opener of a three-game series against rival New York at
Fenway Park.
Designated hitter David Ortiz and catcher David Ross each had RBI
singles for the Red Sox, who had every starter reach base at least
once in winning for just the second time in their past 10 games.
The last-place Red Sox on Thursday turned their attention to next
year in a hurry with a flurry of moves just before the trade
deadline, a mass exodus highlighted by the departures of ace
left-hander and Cy Young candidate Jon Lester and right-hander John
Lackey.
In return on the four separate deals, the Red Sox revamped their
roster with the likes of slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes from
Oakland (who did not play) and outfielder/first baseman Allen Craig
from St. Louis.
Ranaudo (1-0) got the nod after going 12-4 with a 2.41 ERA in 21
starts for Triple-A Pawtucket. The 24-year-old right-hander held the
Yankees to just two runs on four hits with four walks and two
strikeouts.
Astros 3, Blue Jays 1
HOUSTON -- Gregorio Petit hit his first career home run as the
Houston rallied for a pair of runs against the Toronto bullpen at
Minute Maid Park.
Petit, the Astros' shortstop, crushed the first pitch of the bottom
of the eighth inning into the seats in left field, turning on an
Aaron Loup (3-3) fastball to provide Houston (45-65) its first lead
of the game. Astros second baseman Jose Altuve followed with a
double into the left-center field gap. He stole third base and came
around on Robbie Grossman's sacrifice fly to right.
Right-hander Jose Veras (1-0) earned his first win with the Astros
and closer Chad Qualls notched his 12th save by striking out Colby
Rasmus and Danny Valencia to end the game.
Toronto (60-51) had its six-game winning streak snapped.

Angels 5, Rays 3
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Los Angeles rode an early offensive attack and
overcame a shaky ninth-inning performance to pull out a win over Tampa
Bay at Tropicana Field.
Starter Matt Shoemaker went five innings, allowing three runs on eight
hits before the Angels' bullpen took over. Jason Grilli, Kevin Jepsen,
Joe Smith and closer Huston Street combined for four scoreless innings.
The Angels (65-43) made hard contact early and often against Rays
starter Jeremy Hellickson, with outfielder Mike Trout and designated
hitter Josh Hamilton launching homers to lead the charge.
The Rays, meanwhile, fell to 53-56 as they lost their first game since
Thursday's three-team trade that sent ace David Price to Detroit.
Reds 5, Marlins 2
MIAMI -- Right-hander Mat Latos, who played his high school ball in
South Florida, beat his hometown team as Cincinnati Miami at Marlins
Park.
Reds left fielder Ryan Ludwick had the game-winning hit for the second
straight day. He had a two-run single in the eighth inning of the Reds'
3-1 win on Thursday and a two-run double in the sixth Friday.
Latos (3-3) is now 3-0 in his career at Marlins Park. He allowed five
hits, four walks and one run in seven innings.
Reds closer Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 25th
save.
Phillies 2, Nationals 1
WASHINGTON -- Roberto Hernandez allowed one unearned run in eight
innings and Marlon Byrd hit a tiebreaking home run as Philadelphia beat
Washington at Nationals Park.
Byrd, who played for Washington in 2005-06, broke up a pitchers' duel
when he hit a solo homer, his 21st of the season, with two outs in the
sixth inning against Washington starter Doug Fister to make the score
2-1.
Hernandez (6-8) who gave up five hits after he entered the game with a
4.14 ERA, has not allowed an earned run against Washington this year in
two starts.
Closer Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth inning for his 26th save as
he struck out new Nationals second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera for the
final out with two runners on base.
Orioles 2, Mariners 1
BALTIMORE -- J.J. Hardy drove in the tie-breaking run with a
sixth-inning single, and left-hander Wei-Yin Chen earned his career-high
12th win as Baltimore defeated Seattle at Camden Yards.
The Orioles nearly wasted their scoring chance in that sixth inning.
Third baseman Manny Machado led off with a double and went to third when
shortstop Chris Taylor booted a grounder from center fielder Adam Jones.
Seattle starter Roenis Elias (8-9) then struck out both designated
hitter Nelson Cruz and first baseman Chris Davis. Hardy, the Baltimore
shortstop, lined a shot into center to drive in Machado for the 2-1 lead
and ended Elias' night.
That proved just enough for Orioles starter Chen, who held the Mariners
to one run on five hits in 7 1/3 innings. Chen (12-3) also struck out a
season-high eight batters with just one walk and now has won his last
five starts.
Tigers 4, Rockies 2
DETROIT -- Justin Verlander became a 10-game winner with eight solid
innings and new center fielder Rajai Davis accounted for all four
Detroit runs with a two-run single plus two runs scored at Comerica
Park.
Right-hander Joe Nathan earned his 22nd save with a scoreless ninth to
nail down only the Tigers' second victory in their last seven games.
Verlander (10-9) gave up three of his eight hits when the Rockies scored
their two runs in the seventh. Seventy of his 101 pitches were strikes
and he didn't walk a batter while striking out five.
Davis grounded a two-run single up the middle to break a scoreless tie
and second baseman Ian Kinsler followed with an RBI double down the
third-base line.
Giants 5, Mets 1
NEW YORK -- Ryan Vogelsong threw a two-hitter in his first career
nine-inning complete game and scored one of San Francisco's three
seventh-inning runs in the Giants' victory at Citi Field.
The Giants (59-50) won their second straight after a six-game losing
streak and maintained their lead in the National League wild-card race.
The Mets (52-57) failed to move within three games of .500 for the first
time since June 4.
Vogelsong (6-8) carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before
allowing a leadoff single to Mets center fielder Juan Lagares.
Indians 12, Rangers 2
CLEVELAND -- David Murphy had four hits, Michael Brantley added three
and Lonnie Chisenhall continued his demolition of Texas pitching with a
home run as the Cleveland routed the Rangers at Progressive Field.
Right-hander Danny Salazar (4-4) pitched six innings for the win and
Texas right-hander Jerome Williams (1-1) gave up 10 runs and 13 hits in
four innings to take the loss.
In his last game against Texas on June 9, Chisenhall went 5-for-5 with
three home runs and nine RBI. On Friday night, he was 2-for-5 with a
home run and an RBI.
Murphy, who spent the last six years playing for Texas before signing
with the Indians as a free agent during the winter, had two singles and
two doubles to raise his average against the Rangers this season to .526
(10-for-19). Brantley was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and only played the
first five innings.
