The Chicago Cubs activated right-handed pitcher Kyuji Fujikawa from the 60-day disabled list following an almost 14-month recovery from Tommy John surgery, the team announced Wednesday.

The Cubs also said outfielder Nate Schierholtz has been designated for assignment.

According to reports, Miami Marlins right-handed pitcher Jacob Turner was claimed off waivers by the Cubs.

Fujikawa will be available for the Cubs on Wednesday night against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

Fujikawa, 34, returns to the Cubs following his recovery from Tommy John surgery on June 11, 2013. He made his major league debut with the Cubs last season after pitching 12 years with the Hanshin Tigers in Japan's Central League. Fujikawa appeared in 12 games last year, recording the save on Opening Day, and went 1-1 with two saves and a 5.25 ERA. He twice landed on the disabled list, first on April 13 with a right forearm strain, and again on May 27, the day after walking off the mound due to injury with surgery soon to follow.

Fujikawa combined to make 12 rehab appearances with three minor league clubs in the past month, posting no record and a 0.77 ERA.

---Two players were suspended following their violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball said San Francisco Giants minor league right-handed pitcher Jacob Dunnington received a 50-game suspension without pay after a second positive test for a drug of abuse.

Cincinnati Reds minor league shortstop Cesar Mejia received a 72-game suspension without pay after testing positive for a metabolite of Boldenone.

---Minnesota Twins first baseman Joe Mauer will play first base Wednesday for Class A Cedar Rapids, his second game in a weeklong rehabilitation assignment. On the disabled list since July 2 with a strained oblique, Mauer was the designated hitter Tuesday.

---Chicago White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper hasn't improved in his bout with vertigo and will not make the start of the upcoming trip to Seattle and probably won't make the second leg of it to San Francisco.

---The White Sox hope to get right-hander Zach Putnam (right shoulder inflammation) back from the 15-day disabled list Friday and could get right-hander Matt Lindstrom (left ankle surgery) back from the DL on Thursday.

---The Texas Rangers expect to get catcher Geovany Soto back from the 15-day DL on Friday and will also get catcher Chris Gimenez back from the paternity list that day.

---Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons (ankle) was not in the lineup. He was on crutches after spraining his ankle the previous night.

Simmons described the ankle as "not great, but not too bad," adding that he wasn't sure how long he might be out.

---Cleveland Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin, who gave up five earned runs in Tuesday's 9-2 loss, is moving to the bullpen.

"He's having a tough time getting the fastball where he wants to and he's paying the price," manager Terry Francona said.

---New York Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda had a pregame bullpen session and is not a candidate to start Friday against Cleveland. Instead, Pineda will make another rehab start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with his pitch count increased from 75 to 80.

---Miami Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart has been scratched from his scheduled start Thursday night because of a strained oblique muscle. Rookie left-hander Brian Flynn (0-0, 6.00 ERA) will take his place.

Cosart is tentatively slated to pitch next Tuesday night against the St. Louis Cardinals at Miami. Cosart was acquired from Houston in a five-player trade last Thursday and then lost his Marlins debut a night later against Cincinnati, allowing four runs in 5 1/3 innings.

Right-hander Kevin Gregg underwent surgery to remove bone chips from right elbow and will miss the remainder of the season.

---Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen missed his second straight game because of a fracture and cartilage damage in his lower left rib cage but remains hopeful of avoiding the DL.

---Oakland A's shortstop Jed Lowrie (bruised right index finger) was out of the lineup for the second straight game, but manager Bob Melvin said he is recovering quickly. Lowrie was hurt Monday night against Tampa Bay while fielding a ground ball.

"He's better," Melvin said before the series-finale against Tampa Bay. "My guess is he'll start tomorrow, and potentially useable off the bench today."

---Boston Red Sox first baseman Kelly Johnson (strained left groin) started a rehab assignment Tuesday for Double-A Portland at Bowie and went 0-for-3 while playing seven innings. Johnson was acquired from the Yankees last Thursday for shortstop Stephen Drew.

---San Francisco Giants center fielder Angel Pagan wrapped up his minor league rehab assignment by going 1-for-4 with an RBI on Tuesday for Triple-A Fresno and was expected to join the Giants in Milwaukee late Wednesday night.

---Baltimore Orioles right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez (right ankle sprain) felt strong during a bullpen session at Rogers Centre and hopes to be activated from the disabled list later this week.

---Toronto Blue Jays first baseman/designated hitter Adam Lind (right foot fracture) will begin a rehab assignment with the Gulf Coast League Blue Jays on Thursday.

Infielder Brett Lawrie (lower back tightness) missed Wednesday's game. Lawrie, who was pulled from Tuesday's game after three innings, had an MRI, but the team has yet to get the results.

---The Washington Nationals activated left-hander Matt Thornton and sent right-hander Blake Treinen to Triple-A Syracuse.

Thornton was acquired Tuesday in a waiver deal with the Yankees, where he was 0-3 with 12 holds and a 2.55 ERA in 46 games. Treinen is 1-3, 2.35 in 11 games this year for Washington.
