[August 07, 2014]  Aug 6 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Wednesday's Major League Baseball games.

Yankees 5, Tigers 1

Brian McCann hit a go-ahead home run with one out in the seventh inning as the New York Yankees recorded a comfortable victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

The Yankees completed their run of opposing three former Cy Young Award winners in successive games by winning two of the three. They beat Max Scherzer on Monday but lost Tuesday in 12 innings in David Price's Tigers debut.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the third time in franchise history that New York have faced three former Cy Young winners in succession.

Dodgers 2, Angels 1

Dan Haren ended a personal losing streak at five and saved his spot in the rotation with one of his best performances of the year, throwing 7-1/3 innings in the Los Angeles Dodgers' win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Giants 7, Brewers 4

Pablo Sandoval and Mike Morse each drove in three runs as the San Francisco Giants beat the Milwaukee Brewers.

Right-hander Ryan Vogelsong (7-8) gave up seven hits and a walk but held the Brewers to a run while striking out three.

Mariners 7, Braves 3

The Atlanta Braves ended a disastrous West Coast road trip with their eighth consecutive loss, falling to the Seattle Mariners.

The losing streak is Atlanta's longest this season and marked the first time since May 2012 they have lost eight successive games.

Atlanta (58-56) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the third inning but quickly fell behind when starter Julio Teheran gave up two homers in the bottom half. Among them was a three-run shot by Seattle first baseman Logan Morrison.

Rays 7, A's 3

Right-hander Jeremy Hellickson threw seven strong innings while right fielder Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run homer as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Oakland Athletics.

Hellickson (1-1) allowed one run and two hits, posting his first victory as a starter since Sept. 4, 2013. He struck out three, walked none and threw a season-high 99 pitches.

Rangers 3, White Sox 1

Adam Rosales hit two home runs while Nick Tepesch did not allow a run in his return to the mound as the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox.

Rosales went 2-for-4 and drove in all three runs for the Rangers, while Tepesch (4-7) threw 5-2/3 scoreless innings and was credited with the win.

The Texas bullpen did the rest, with three relievers making a slim lead hold up.

Padres 5, Twins 4 (10 innings)

Seth Smith's long solo home run to start the 10th inning was the difference as the San Diego Padres beat the Minnesota Twins.

Given new life thanks to a rally in the top of the ninth and a great defensive play in the bottom half, left fielder Smith blasted a 414-foot shot over the wall in right for his 12th homer of the season.

Nationals 7, Mets 1

Doug Fister took a shutout into the eighth inning and Adam LaRoche hit two homers as the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets.

Fister (11-3) gave up one unearned run and six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks while throwing 101 pitches in 7-1/3 innings.

Pirates 7, Marlins 3

Left-hander Jeff Locke overcame a wobbly start to pitch seven innings while Josh Harrison had three more hits to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Locke (3-3) gave up three runs in the first two innings but then shut out the Marlins in his last five innings.

He gave up six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out seven in winning for the first in five career starts against Miami.

Blue Jays 5, Orioles 1

Jose Bautista homered and drove in three runs while right-hander Drew Hutchison threw a gem to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Bautista (3-for-4) hit his 22nd homer of the season in the second inning, and he singled in the fourth.

The right fielder drove in another run on a two-out double in the sixth to help the Blue Jays snap a four-game losing streak.

Reds 8, Indians 3

Zack Cozart hit a three-run homer and second baseman Kristopher Negron added a two-run shot to lift the Cincinnati Reds to a win over the Cleveland Indians.

Negron went 3-for-4, for his first career 3-hit game and starter Mat Latos (4-3) allowed three runs and six hits in 7-2/3 innings for Cincinnati.

Phillies 10, Astros 3

Ben Revere went 4-for-5 and Chase Utley hit a three-run homer as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Houston Astros.

First baseman Ryan Howard doubled in two runs for Philadelphia, who broke out offensively to win for the fourth time in six games. The Phillies had scored two runs in their previous 36 innings, including a 22-inning scoreless drought.

Rockies 13, Cubs 4

Colorado reached a season-high in runs and pounded the Chicago Cubs as the Rockies broke a five-game losing streak.

Cubs starter Jake Arrieta, who brought a 2.11 ERA into the game, was blasted for a career-high 13 hits, a career-high tying nine runs and was replaced after giving up seven successive hits to start the six-run sixth inning.

Red Sox 2, Cardinals 1

Shortstop Xander Bogaerts' sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning gave the Red Sox a victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.

In a game dominated by the pitching of Boston's Joe Kelly and St. Louis' Shelby Miller, it was reliever Junichi Tazawa (2-3) who earned the win after pitching a clean eighth inning.

Closer Koji Uehara worked around two singles in the ninth to bag his 23rd save.

Royals 4, Diamondbacks 3

Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas homered and drove in all four runs in the Royals' win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
