passed away at 7:15 a.m. July 30, 2014 at Vonderlieth Living Center,

Obituary
Elza “Leroy” Gass, 93, of Mount Pulaski, formerly of
Niantic, passed away at 7:15 a.m. July 30, 2014 at
Vonderlieth Living Center, Mount Pulaski.
Leroy was born August 26, 1920 in Dawson, the son of
Elza Edward and Mary Ann Sullivan Gass. He married
Hope Pritchett May 1943. She preceded him in death
in 2009.
Leroy was survived by one daughter: Linda Burke of
Decatur; one sister: Betty Bragg of Decatur. He was
preceded in death by his parents, wife; brothers:
Norman, Virgil, Lester, and Herbert Gass; sisters:
Martha, Doris, Lois, Thelma and one grandson: Craig
Burke.
Leroy graduated from Niantic High School in 1939; He
played with St. Louis Cardinals Minor League from
1939-1941; and served in the United States Army in
World War II. Elza worked at Staleys in Decatur for
41 years. He served on the Niantic Volunteer Fire
Department for 33 years and 15 years as Fire Chief;
He had served on the Niantic Village Board for 20
years; Eight as Village Board Trustee and 12 years
as Mayor of Niantic. He was baseball manager for
Niantic Little League for many years. |
Services for Leroy will be at 11:30 a.m. on
Saturday, August 2, 2014 at United Methodist Church,
Niantic, IL with Rev. C.W. Reneker officiating.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the time of
service at the church. Burial will be in Long Point
Cemetery, Niantic with Military Rites accorded.
Memorials may be given to Niantic Fire Department or
United Methodist Church of Niantic. Services were
entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home,
Lincoln.
