Royals 3, A's 2
Shortstop Alcides Escobar drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh
inning as the Kansas City Royals moved into first place in the
American League Central with a victory over the Oakland Athletics.
The Royals have won eight straight and 16-of-19 to move a half-game
in front of the Detroit Tigers.
Kansas City starter Yordano Ventura allowed two runs in six innings,
and the Royals bullpen protected the late lead with Greg Holland
picking up his 35th save.
A's right-hander Sonny Gray (12-6) absorbed the loss, yielding three
runs in seven innings.

Orioles 11, Yankees 3
Chris Davis, Nelson Cruz and Jonathan Schoop all homered, and Adam
Jones drove in two runs as the Baltimore Orioles scored a victory
over the New York Yankees.
Davis was not in the starting lineup but came in to play third base
when Manny Machado sprained his knee in the third inning. He will be
reevaluated on Tuesday.
The first-place Orioles improved to 68-50 while the Yankees fell to
61-57.

Pirates 11, Tigers 6
Travis Snider had the third two-home run game of his career to go
with three hits, three runs scored and four RBIs to power the
Pittsburgh Pirates past Detroit as Tigers starter Justin Verlander
left early with shoulder soreness.
On a day Pittsburgh (63-55) placed All Star outfielder Andrew
McCutchen on the 15-day disabled list with injured ribs, they came
alive for a big offensive day.
Verlander (10-11) exited after allowing five runs - four earned -
after just one inning for the Tigers (63-53).

Brewers 3, Cubs 1
Right-hander Yovani Gallardo scattered six hits and struck out six
as he helped lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a victory over the
Chicago Cubs.
Milwaukee (66-53) snapped a 1-1 tie in the seventh when left fielder
Khris Davis singled down the left-field line off Jake Arrieta,
driving in second baseman Scooter Gennett with two outs.
Arrieta (6-4) departed with one out in the eighth and a runner on
first after throwing 95 pitches for the Cubs (50-67).

Dodgers 6, Braves 2
Newly acquired pitcher Kevin Correia allowed just two runs over six
innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Atlanta.
Correia, picked up from the Minnesota Twins on Saturday, also went
2-for-2 and scored a run, making for a memorable Dodgers debut
against the Braves (60-58).
Dodgers (68-52) left fielder Carl Crawford had three hits and drove
in two runs, while center fielder Yasiel Puig added two hits, a
walk, and two runs.

Marlins 6, Cardinals 5
Giancarlo Stanton homered twice, drove in three runs and made an
impressive catch in the fifth inning to lead the Miami Marlins to a
win over the St Louis Cardinals.
With his two blasts, Stanton tied Jose Abreu of the Chicago White
Sox for the major-league lead with 31 homers.
Matt Holliday went 4-for-4 for the Cardinals (62-55) who fell three
games behind first-place Milwaukee in the National League Central.

Rays 7, Rangers 0
The Tampa Bay Rays continued their mid-season surge with a pasting of
the Texas Rangers.
Drew Smyly pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, and designated hitter Matt
Joyce drove in two runs for Tampa Bay, which is 34-18 since July 11.
The Rays (58-60) are closing in on the remarkable feat of reaching .500
after being 18 games below at one point.
Last-place Texas fell to 46-72.

Mets 5, Phillies 3
Jonathon Niese threw seven strong innings to help the Mets beat the
Phillies.
Niese allowed just two runs over seven innings and Anthony Recker
delivered a three-run home run in the seventh inning to lift his pitcher
and New York (57-62).

Mariners 11, Blue Jays 1
The Seattle Mariners blew out the road-weary Toronto Blue Jays with a
seven-run blast in the sixth inning in a battle of American League
wild-card contenders.
Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez (13-3) was spectacular as he
allowed three hits and one run over seven innings.
The Mariners (63-55) stayed within 1 1/2 games of the red-hot Kansas
City Royals in the battle for the AL's second wild-card spot.
Toronto (63-57) lost a game on Seattle after entering the day in a
virtual tie with the Mariners in the wild-card standings.

Twins 4, Astros 2
Joe Mauer made his return from the disabled list a triumphant one,
extending his long-delayed hitting streak while also driving in the
winning run in the ninth inning of the Minnesota Twins' win over the
Houston Astros.
Despite missing 34 games with a strained right oblique, first baseman
Mauer reached base three times in his first game since landing on the
15-day Disabled List.
His RBI single off Astros right-hander Josh Fields (2-5) broke a 2-2 tie
before Brian Dozier also scored from first base on the play when left
fielder Domingo Santana held the ball long enough for the runner to
round third base.

Padres 4, Rockies 3
Yangervis Solarte hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning, leading the
San Diego Padres to a win over the Colorado Rockies.
Before Solarte's third homer since joining the Padres in late July,
Colorado led 3-2 thanks to a three-run homer by left fielder Corey
