San Francisco stands five games behind Los Angeles in the NL West
after running into a hot Kansas City team over the weekend to close
out a road trip that started out promising and ended with a 4-6
mark. The Giants totaled seven runs in their last four losses and
took another hit to the offense on Sunday when Michael Morse was
scratched from the lineup due to a toe injury. Chicago is in the
midst of its own offensive slump with an average of 1.5 runs in the
last six games and will not face a team currently with a losing
record until Sept. 2.
TV: 10:15 p.m. ET, WGN (Chicago), CSN Bay Area (San Francisco)
PITCHING MATCHUP: White Sox LH Chris Sale (10-2, 2.14 ERA) vs.
Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (7-8, 3.77)
Sale is mired in what qualifies as a slump for him without a win in
either of his last two starts. The All-Star lasted only six innings
in each of those two outings and ended up with a loss against Texas
on Wednesday despite yielding two runs on three hits while striking
out nine. Sale won his lone previous start against San Francisco and
is 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA in 14 career interleague games -- six starts.
Vogelsong has been sharp of late and is coming off back-to-back wins
with a total of two runs and nine hits allowed in 15 innings. The
veteran issued a total of three walks in his last five outings and
only 35 in 133 2/3 total frames this season. Vogelsong is facing
Chicago for the first time and is 5-6 with a 3.91 ERA in interleague
play.
