The Baltimore Orioles placed third baseman Manny Machado on the 15-day disabled list due to a right knee sprain, the team announced Wednesday.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 12.

Machado, who underwent surgery on his left knee after suffering a torn medial patellofemoral ligament in the final days of the 2013 season, had his right knee collapse under him on a swing as he hit a broken-bat grounder in the third inning of Monday's 11-3 victory over the New York Yankees.

Machado was helped off the field by manager Buck Showalter. Machado had an MRI on the knee the following day, which confirmed the sprain.

Machado, 22, has batted .278 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs in 82 games for the Orioles this season.

The Orioles recalled infielder Cord Phelps from Triple-A Norfolk.

To make room for Phelps on the 40-man roster, catcher Matt Wieters has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

---Jayson Werth was charged with reckless driving after being pulled over July 6 for going 105 mph in a 55-mph zone.

The Washington Nationals outfielder and fan favorite had the hearing in the matter continued until Nov. 12. The incident took place in Fairfax County, Virginia, based on court documents.

Werth is day-to-day with right shoulder inflammation. He is hitting .279 with 12 home runs and 63 RBIs.

---Detroit Tigers right-hander Justin Verlander expressed relief after an MRI on Tuesday showed no structural damage to his pitching shoulder.

Verlander exited his start Monday against the Pirates with shoulder soreness after he allowed five runs in the first inning.

"Obviously, you're kind of thinking the worst and hoping for the best," he said. "It seemed like I got the best news possible."

---Left-hander Jon Lester was traded from Boston to the Oakland Athletics at the deadline last month, but he's open to returning to the Red Sox next season.

Lester told the Boston Herald that he doesn't harbor any ill feelings toward the Red Sox and general manager Ben Cherrington.

"My time there, the memories and all that stuff don't get erased based on this whole ordeal," Lester told the Herald. "I'm glad with where I'm at, and I understood where Ben was at.

"At the end of the season, it's not going to change my mind about going back there if they are aggressive and competitive and do the things they say they're going to do. Boston is definitely a place I would go."

The 30-year-old Lester said he was told the Red Sox would consider bringing him back when he becomes a free agent at the end of this season.

---The New York Mets are expected to retain Terry Collins as manager next season, CBSSports.com reported.

The 65-year-old Collins is under contract for 2015, which would be his fifth season with the Mets, and is likely to return as long as the Mets avoid a collapse in the final month of the season.

The Mets went into Wednesday's games with a 57-63 record this season, boosted by an 11-10 mark in the past 21 games. Collins has compiled a 282-324 mark during his time in New York.

---Boston Red Sox left fielder Yoenis Cespedes left the game after six innings with a right hand contusion.

"In his last at-bat he got jammed pretty good," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "It was precautionary that we took him out. He was fighting to stay in."

---Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips could begin a minor league rehab assignment as early as Friday. Phillips, who has been on the disabled list since suffering a torn ligament in his left thumb making a diving stop on July 9, began taking batting practice this week.

---Houston Astros first baseman/left fielder Jesus Guzman will began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday. Guzman missed his 11th game Wednesday after landing on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms on Aug. 2.

---New York Yankees right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda was officially reinstated from the 60-day disabled list in anticipation of Wednesday night's start against the Baltimore Orioles.

Pineda was on the 60-day disabled list due to shoulder inflammation. He is 2-2 and with a 1.83 ERA over 19 2/3 innings this season

The Yankees also designated right-handed pitcher Chris Leroux for assignment.

Meanwhile, right-handed pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was able to throw Wednesday with no pain, according to the Wall Street Journal. Tanaka threw 10 pitches from flat ground, and did not have any issues with his elbow.

---Right-handed pitcher Stephen Fife, who had been with the Los Angeles Dodgers' Triple-A team in Albuquerque, underwent Tommy John elbow surgery.
