The move is retroactive to Aug. 12.
Machado, who underwent surgery on his left knee after suffering a
torn medial patellofemoral ligament in the final days of the 2013
season, had his right knee collapse under him on a swing as he hit a
broken-bat grounder in the third inning of Monday's 11-3 victory
over the New York Yankees.
Machado was helped off the field by manager Buck Showalter. Machado
had an MRI on the knee the following day, which confirmed the
sprain.
Machado, 22, has batted .278 with 12 home runs and 32 RBIs in 82
games for the Orioles this season.
The Orioles recalled infielder Cord Phelps from Triple-A Norfolk.
To make room for Phelps on the 40-man roster, catcher Matt Wieters
has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
---Jayson Werth was charged with reckless driving after being pulled
over July 6 for going 105 mph in a 55-mph zone.
The Washington Nationals outfielder and fan favorite had the hearing
in the matter continued until Nov. 12. The incident took place in
Fairfax County, Virginia, based on court documents.
Werth is day-to-day with right shoulder inflammation. He is hitting
.279 with 12 home runs and 63 RBIs.

after an MRI on Tuesday showed no structural damage to his pitching
shoulder.
Verlander exited his start Monday against the Pirates with shoulder
soreness after he allowed five runs in the first inning.
"Obviously, you're kind of thinking the worst and hoping for the
best," he said. "It seemed like I got the best news possible."
---Left-hander Jon Lester was traded from Boston to the Oakland
Athletics at the deadline last month, but he's open to returning to
the Red Sox next season.
Lester told the Boston Herald that he doesn't harbor any ill
feelings toward the Red Sox and general manager Ben Cherrington.
"My time there, the memories and all that stuff don't get erased
based on this whole ordeal," Lester told the Herald. "I'm glad with
where I'm at, and I understood where Ben was at.
"At the end of the season, it's not going to change my mind about
going back there if they are aggressive and competitive and do the
things they say they're going to do. Boston is definitely a place I
would go."
The 30-year-old Lester said he was told the Red Sox would consider
bringing him back when he becomes a free agent at the end of this
season.
---The New York Mets are expected to retain Terry Collins as manager

The 65-year-old Collins is under contract for 2015, which would be his
fifth season with the Mets, and is likely to return as long as the Mets
avoid a collapse in the final month of the season.
The Mets went into Wednesday's games with a 57-63 record this season,
boosted by an 11-10 mark in the past 21 games. Collins has compiled a
282-324 mark during his time in New York.
---Boston Red Sox left fielder Yoenis Cespedes left the game after six
innings with a right hand contusion.
"In his last at-bat he got jammed pretty good," said Red Sox manager
John Farrell. "It was precautionary that we took him out. He was
fighting to stay in."
---Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips could begin a minor
league rehab assignment as early as Friday. Phillips, who has been on
the disabled list since suffering a torn ligament in his left thumb
making a diving stop on July 9, began taking batting practice this week.
---Houston Astros first baseman/left fielder Jesus Guzman will began a
rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday. Guzman missed
his 11th game Wednesday after landing on the 15-day disabled list with
back spasms on Aug. 2.
---New York Yankees right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda was officially
reinstated from the 60-day disabled list in anticipation of Wednesday
night's start against the Baltimore Orioles.
Pineda was on the 60-day disabled list due to shoulder inflammation. He
is 2-2 and with a 1.83 ERA over 19 2/3 innings this season
The Yankees also designated right-handed pitcher Chris Leroux for
assignment.
Meanwhile, right-handed pitcher Masahiro Tanaka was able to throw
Wednesday with no pain, according to the Wall Street Journal. Tanaka
threw 10 pitches from flat ground, and did not have any issues with his
elbow.
---Right-handed pitcher Stephen Fife, who had been with the Los Angeles
Dodgers' Triple-A team in Albuquerque, underwent Tommy John elbow
surgery.
