Peavy (2-12), who entered the day with the second-worst run
support of any qualified starter in the majors, looked on his way to
another tough loss before the Giants exploded in the seventh,
highlighted by Angel Pagan’s two-run single. The right-hander was
charged with one run on four hits and three walks in seven innings
as San Francisco snapped a five-game slide and pulled even with St.
Louis for the second National League wild-card spot.
Jose Quintana (6-9) cruised through the first six innings scoreless
but ended up charged with four runs and four hits while striking out
seven in 6 2/3 frames. Adam Dunn belted a solo home run and
Alejandro De Aza doubled to highlight the White Sox offense.
Quintana retired 10 straight batters before Michael Morse’s one-out
single in the seventh got the Giants started. Adam Duvall followed
with a single and Joe Panik’s fielder’s choice to first originally
resulted in an out call at home until a review revealed that catcher
Tyler Flowers was blocking the plate before receiving the ball,
overturning the call and allowing the tying run to cross.
Quintana was pulled after a two-out walk and Ronald Belisario came
on in relief, immediately yielding Pagan’s two-run, go-ahead single
and back-to-back RBI singles to Hunter Pence and Buster Posey before
being pulled. Dunn’s error in right allowed two more runs to score
as the Giants piled on.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The review of the call at the plate in the seventh and
subsequent arguments from Chicago manager Robin Ventura led to another
review of where to place the runners on the bases, taking nearly 10
minutes altogether and leading to Ventura’s ejection. … Dunn’s blast was
the 459 of his career and landed in “McCovey Cove” beyond the stands in
right. … Peavy improved to 1-3 since joining San Francisco and won for
the first time since beating Toronto as a member of the Boston Red Sox
on April 25.
