for the New York Mets after he flew home to the Dominican Republic
to be with his hospitalized mother.
Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday morning that Colon's mother
was "extremely ill." Colon told ESPNDeportes.com earlier this season
that his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in April.
Collins said the Mets would place Colon on the bereavement list, but
not until Tuesday because the club couldn't get a pitcher to Citi
Field in time for Monday's 12:10 p.m. ET matinee against the Chicago
Cubs.
The Mets could activate right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka from the
15-day disabled list Tuesday, but he wasn't available Monday because

Saturday.

International League.

Gonzalez from the minors at some point this week.

Gonzalez threw a 75-pitch simulated start Monday to keep his arm
loose, after being optioned Aug.9 to Triple-A Norfolk to make room
on the roster for right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez to come off the 15-day
disabled list. Whenever Gonzalez returns, either he or Jimenez will
likely join the bullpen and the other will stay in the rotation.

Sunday's doubleheader at Colorado, back to Louisville.
---St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha (stress reaction)
threw his second bullpen session after undergoing an MRI. Wacha, who
has been on the disabled list since June 22, is still hoping to
start a rehab assignment before minor league seasons end in early
September.
---Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen is expected to be
activated from the disabled list for Tuesday night's game against
the Atlanta Braves.

fine after taking batting practice and running the bases Monday
afternoon.
