[August 19, 2014]  The Boston Red Sox demoted outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and recalled outfielder/infielder Mookie Betts from Triple-A Pawtucket, the team announced Monday.

Bradley was optioned to Pawtucket following Sunday's game.

The 24-year-old Bradley has spent the entire season with Boston, batting .216 with 19 doubles, two triples, one home run, 30 RBIs, 45 runs scored, 31 walks and eight stolen bases in 112 games, second-most among American League rookies in 2014.

Betts, 21, returns for his third career major league stint, all this season. In his previous two stints, from June 28-July 18 and Aug. 1-6, he played in 13 games and hit .244 with two doubles, one home run, two RBIs, a walk and six runs scored while playing eight games in right field (five starts) and six games in center field (all starts).

---Right-hander Bartolo Colon was scratched from his scheduled start for the New York Mets after he flew home to the Dominican Republic to be with his hospitalized mother.

Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday morning that Colon's mother was "extremely ill." Colon told ESPNDeportes.com earlier this season that his mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in April.

Collins said the Mets would place Colon on the bereavement list, but not until Tuesday because the club couldn't get a pitcher to Citi Field in time for Monday's 12:10 p.m. ET matinee against the Chicago Cubs.

The Mets could activate right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, but he wasn't available Monday because he threw 69 pitches in a rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Saturday.

---Pittsburgh Pirates minor league right-handed pitcher Michael Clemens received a 68-game suspension without pay for his possession and use of human growth hormone, the league announced.

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced Clemens violated the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.

The suspension of Clemens, who is currently on the roster of Rookie-level Bristol of the Appalachian League, is effective immediately.

---The Washington Nationals signed outfielder Nate Schierholtz to a minor league contract.

Schierholtz became a free agent on Aug. 13 after he cleared waivers. Schierholtz was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 6.

Schierholtz will be assigned to Syracuse of the Triple-A International League.

---The Baltimore Orioles plan to call up right-hander Miguel Gonzalez from the minors at some point this week.

[to top of second column]

Gonzalez threw a 75-pitch simulated start Monday to keep his arm loose, after being optioned Aug.9 to Triple-A Norfolk to make room on the roster for right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez to come off the 15-day disabled list. Whenever Gonzalez returns, either he or Jimenez will likely join the bullpen and the other will stay in the rotation.

---Chicago White Sox manager Robin Ventura said injured center fielder Adam Eaton (strained right oblique) is moving around better. Ventura also said Eaton might be assigned a brief injury-rehab stint in the minor leagues before he comes off the 15-day disabled list.

---Philadelphia Phillies outfielder/first baseman John Mayberry Jr., on the disabled list since July 21 with an inflamed left wrist, will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

---The Cincinnati Reds activated second baseman Brandon Phillips (left thumb) and right-hander Logan Ondrusek (shoulder strain) from the 15-day disabled list while optioning catcher Tucker Barnhart and right-hander Dylan Axelrod to Triple-A Louisville.

The Reds also sent right-hander Curtis Partch, the 26th man in Sunday's doubleheader at Colorado, back to Louisville.

---St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha (stress reaction) threw his second bullpen session after undergoing an MRI. Wacha, who has been on the disabled list since June 22, is still hoping to start a rehab assignment before minor league seasons end in early September.

---Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen is expected to be activated from the disabled list for Tuesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves.

McCutchen, last season's National League MVP, has been out since Aug. 4 with a fracture in his lower left ribcage but said he felt fine after taking batting practice and running the bases Monday afternoon.
