C.J. Wilson and four relievers combined on a nine-hitter, and the Los Angeles Angels took over sole possession of first place for the first time since Opening Day 2013 with a victory over the Boston Red Sox.

Technically, the Angels (73-50), who own seven wins in their past nine games at Fenway Park, led the idle Oakland Athletics by a percentage point coming into the game. They now hold a half-game lead, their first actual game advantage since winning last year's opener.

Center fielder Mike Trout and designated hitter Albert Pujols stroked back-to-back RBI hits off hard-luck loser Brandon Workman in the third inning, and Red Sox reliever Junichi Tazawa was guilty of a double error with the bases loaded in the eighth, good for two more runs.

Cardinals 6, Reds 5 (10 innings)

Jhonny Peralta singled in the winning run as St. Louis took an extra-inning win against Cincinnati.

Peralta finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs in the triumph for the Cardinals (67-57).

Jay Bruce forced extra innings for the Reds (61-64) with a game-tying double in the ninth.

Orioles 8, White Sox 2

Bud Norris outdueled Chicago White Sox ace left-hander Chris Sale and the Baltimore Orioles used it to win their second game in as many days.

Norris (11-7) had one of his best starts of the season, needing only 82 pitches to get through seven innings.

The Orioles (71-52), who hold a comfortable lead in the American League East, scored three runs of Sale in his six innings of work.

Royals 6, Twins 4

Pinch-hitter Erik Kratz hit two home runs to power the Kansas City Royals past Minnesota.

Kratz gave his team a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning and added another solo shot in the ninth for the first-place Royals (69-55). Minnesota fell to 55-68.

Nationals 5, Diamondbacks 4 (11 innings)

Adam LaRoche homered with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, giving the Washington Nationals their seventh consecutive victory.

In the top of the 11th, the D-backs loaded the bases with no outs before right-hander Craig Stammen (3-4) struck out the next two hitters and got pinch hitter Cliff Pennington on a grounder to second.

First-place Washington improved to 70-53.

Braves 7, Pirates 3

Jason Heyward and Andrelton Simmons led off the game with back-to-back home runs as the Atlanta Braves scored six runs in the first inning and held on for a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Heyward had three hits and two RBIs as the Braves extended their overall winning streak to four games.

Pittsburgh fell to 64-61.

Phillies 4, Mariners 1

Jerome Williams pitched seven strong innings and Andres Blanco hit his first homer in over three years on as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Seattle Mariners.

Williams, making his second start for Philadelphia (55-70) since he was claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers on Aug. 7, allowed one run and three hits.

The Mariners (67-57) fell for only the third time in 13 games.

Cubs 4, Mets 1

Anthony Rizzo scored the tying run in the sixth inning and hit a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning to lead the Chicago Cubs to a win over the New York Mets.

Javier Baez added a long two-run homer in the ninth inning for the Cubs (54-70).

The Mets (59-67) had just four hits, the franchise record-tying fifth straight game in which they were limited to four hits or less.
