[August 23, 2014]  Aug 22 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Friday's Major League Baseball games.

Braves 3, Reds 1 (12 innings)

Atlanta starter Mike Minor flirted with a no-hitter as the Braves beat the slumping Cincinnati Reds 3-1 in 12 innings.

Minor held Cincinnati hitless until center fielder Billy Hamilton's RBI single with two outs in the eighth tied the score 1-1.

Minor, who almost became the first Braves pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Kent Mercker accomplished the feat in April 1994, walked four and struck out five in his 107-pitch outing.

Cincinnati (61-68) extended its losing streak to seven, while Atlanta (68-61) defeated the Reds for the fifth straight time this season.

No visiting pitcher has thrown a regular season no-hitter at Cincinnati's home stadium since 1971.

A's 5, Angels 3

Right-hander Sonny Gray allowed three runs on six hits over 8 1/3 innings and the Oakland Athletics beat the first-place Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a key three-game series between the top two teams in the American League West.

A's closer Sean Doolittle survived a high-wire act to record his 19th save.

Los Angeles loaded the bases with two out in the ninth inning before Doolittle struck out pinch hitter Chris Iannetta to end the game.

Cubs 4, Orioles 1

Right-hander Jake Arrieta struck out five and allowed just four hits in seven innings in his first appearance against his former team as the Chicago Cubs beat the Baltimore Orioles.

Arrieta, acquired in a trade with Baltimore in July 2013, allowed a seventh-inning home run to major league leader Nelson Cruz and improved to 7-4 with his second win since late June.

The result halted Baltimore's four-game winning streak but the Orioles remain runaway leaders in the American League East.

Rays 8, Blue Jays 0

Drew Smyly pitched a two-hitter in his first career complete game as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Toronto Blue Jays.

Smyly (8-10), a left-hander who was acquired in a July 31 trade that sent left-hander David Price to the Detroit Tigers, retired his final 19 batters and did not allow a walk to earn his second win for the Rays.

Evan Longoria drove in three runs for the Rays as Toronto (65-63) opened a nine-game home-stand with a loss after coming off a 2-6 road trip.

Giants 10, Nationals 3

Joe Panik had a career-high four hits and three RBIs, including his first big league homer, as the San Francisco Giants ended the Washington Nationals' 10-game winning streak.

Washington (73-54) had tied a franchise record with its winning streak but it had no answer against the Giants (68-59), who ran up 14 hits for their third win in a row.

Mariners 5, Red Sox 3

The Seattle Mariners scored a dramatic road victory over the slumping Boston Red Sox.

Down 3-0 and facing Boston closer Koji Uehara (5-4), the Mariners rallied for five runs in the ninth inning, doing most of their damage with two outs.

The stunning loss was the sixth straight for the Red Sox, who had been 44-0 when leading after eight innings.

Pirates 8, Brewers 3

Josh Harrison homered and drove in a career-high five runs as the Pittsburgh Pirates took advantage of three Milwaukee errors in a victory over the Brewers.

The errors led to five unearned runs for Pittsburgh and took the pressure off left-hander Jeff Locke.

Yankees 4, White Sox 3

Martin Prado ended a tough at-bat with a two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the New York Yankees to victory over the Chicago White Sox.

- - -

Phillies 5, Cardinals 4

Kyle Kendrick overcame his customary slow start to win for the first time in nearly a month as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the St Louis Cardinals.

First baseman Ryan Howard drove in two runs for the Phillies, who won for the third time in four games and denied St Louis right-hander Adam Wainwright an opportunity to become the first 16-game winner in the majors.

- - -

Astros 5, Indians 1

Cleveland committed two errors in the top of the ninth inning, leading to a four-run Houston rally, three of them coming from a home run by first baseman Jon Singleton, and the Astros beat the Indians.

- - -

Royals 6, Rangers 3

Billy Butler and Josh Willingham hit solo home runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Texas Rangers for their 23rd win in the past 29 games.

Diamondbacks 5, Padres 1

Arizona catcher Miguel Montero hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and right-hander Josh Collmenter came within two outs of his second complete game of the season as the Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres.

Collmenter (9-7) retired 15 straight batters before giving up two singles in the ninth inning and being replaced. He struck out a season-high eight and gave up one unearned run in 8 1/3 innings while winning for the first time since July 20.

- - -

Dodgers 6, Mets 2

Dan Haren tossed a three-hitter, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers to victory over the New York Mets.

The Dodgers (73-57) have owned the Mets recently, winning 12 of their last 14 games against them.

- - -

Twins 20, Tigers 6

The Minnesota Twins scored a season-high 20 runs and pounded out 20 hits in a thrashing of the Detroit Tigers.

Detroit cycled through eight pitchers and fell to a season-high 2 1/2 games behind the first place Royals in the American League Central.

Marlins 13, Rockies 5

The Miami Marlins began a nine-game road trip by trouncing the Colorado Rockies and nudging back above .500 (64-63).

Every Marlins position player had at least one hit in their balanced 16-hit attack. (Editing by Andrew Both and John O'Brien)
