[August 27, 2014]  WAYNESVILLE - John "Gerald" Michaels, 97, of Waynesville passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2014 at 2:52 p.m. at Manor Court of Clinton.

Visitation:  5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Service: A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, 11:00 a.m. at the Waynesville United Methodist Church.

Obituary

Waynesville -- Driving hundreds of miles throughout his career and retirement, Gerald Michaels has reached his final destination and is at rest. He died peacefully at 2:52 p.m., August 24, 2014 at Manor Court of Clinton with his daughters at his side.

John Gerald was born August 7, 1917, to William Bertie and Mary Lena Mason Michaels. He married L. Ruth Durbin on May 10, 1942. She preceded him in death on May 24, 2009. Also preceding him in death were his parents, infant son Alan Gerald in 1951, brother Wilbur, nephew David Michaels, great-nephew Scott Michaels, and son-in-law Stan Morgan.

He is survived by daughters Sheryl Morgan of Champaign and Janice (Harry) Dellinger of Clinton; grandchildren: Neil (Jennifer) Dellinger of Westfield, IN and Thressa (Evan) Johnson of Fort Polk, LA; great-grandsons: Logan and Grayson Dellinger and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald was an over the road truck driver hauling new cars for Cassen Transport of Hamel and a tank truck for Transport Service Company of Decatur before retiring in 1982. He was a member of Teamsters Local Union #279 of Decatur.

He was an integral part of the Waynesville United Methodist Church for 86 years and served on various committees and boards for many years. He also served as a Township Trustee for the Village of Waynesville.

Gerald and Ruth enjoyed traveling and visiting family and friends. They spent a week each of six consecutive years doing mission work at a Native American school in Farmington, NM. They traveled many miles by motor home and enjoyed their trips to the Southwest the most.

Funeral Director

He was an avid sports fan, watching as many games as possible. Reading western novels, doing word search and jigsaw puzzles and raising horses were his hobbies. Although he was never a farmer by occupation, he loved the land and was a proud Centennial Farm land owner.

A Celebration of Life for Gerald will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Waynesville United Methodist Church. Rev. Becky Barrow will officiate.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Waynesville.

Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church on Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Waynesville United Methodist Church, Waynesville Fire Department or Waynesville Library.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their support and kindness to Gerald throughout the years. They also thank and appreciate the entire staff of Liberty Village Manor Court for their love and care during the three months Gerald resided there.

Final arrangements are entrusted with Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home of Atlanta.
