Obituary
Waynesville -- Driving hundreds of miles throughout
his career and retirement, Gerald Michaels has
reached his final destination and is at rest. He
died peacefully at 2:52 p.m., August 24, 2014 at
Manor Court of Clinton with his daughters at his
side.
John Gerald was born August 7, 1917, to William
Bertie and Mary Lena Mason Michaels. He married L.
Ruth Durbin on May 10, 1942. She preceded him in
death on May 24, 2009. Also preceding him in death
were his parents, infant son Alan Gerald in 1951,
brother Wilbur, nephew David Michaels, great-nephew
Scott Michaels, and son-in-law Stan Morgan.
He is survived by daughters Sheryl Morgan of
Champaign and Janice (Harry) Dellinger of Clinton;
grandchildren: Neil (Jennifer) Dellinger of
Westfield, IN and Thressa (Evan) Johnson of Fort
Polk, LA; great-grandsons: Logan and Grayson
Dellinger and many nieces and nephews.
Gerald was an over the road truck driver hauling new
cars for Cassen Transport of Hamel and a tank truck
for Transport Service Company of Decatur before
retiring in 1982. He was a member of Teamsters Local
Union #279 of Decatur.
He was an integral part of the Waynesville United
Methodist Church for 86 years and served on various
committees and boards for many years. He also served
as a Township Trustee for the Village of
Waynesville.
Gerald and Ruth enjoyed traveling and visiting
family and friends. They spent a week each of six
consecutive years doing mission work at a Native
American school in Farmington, NM. They traveled
many miles by motor home and enjoyed their trips to
the Southwest the most. |
He was an avid sports fan, watching as many games as
possible. Reading western novels, doing word search
and jigsaw puzzles and raising horses were his
hobbies. Although he was never a farmer by
occupation, he loved the land and was a proud
Centennial Farm land owner.
A Celebration of Life for Gerald will be held on
Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the
Waynesville United Methodist Church. Rev. Becky
Barrow will officiate.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Waynesville.
Friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00
p.m. on Friday, August 29, 2014 at Quiram-Peasley
Funeral Home in Atlanta and from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00
a.m. at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to
Waynesville United Methodist Church, Waynesville
Fire Department or Waynesville Library.
The family wishes to thank everyone for their
support and kindness to Gerald throughout the years.
They also thank and appreciate the entire staff of

during the three months Gerald resided there.
Final arrangements are entrusted with Quiram-Peasley
