Pirates 3, Cardinals 1
Jeff Locke pitched into the eighth inning and Ike Davis hit a
two-run home run to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-1 victory
over the St Louis Cardinals.
Locke (6-3) allowed one run on six hits in 7 1/3 innings to beat St
Louis (71-61) pitcher Adam Wainwright, who remained stuck on 15 wins
for the season.
Wainwright (15-9) gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings.
Pirates (69-64) closer Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless ninth
inning for his 24th save in 28 opportunities.

Royals 6, Twins 1
First baseman Billy Butler and catcher Salvador Perez each drove in
two runs in a six-run eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals
defeated the Minnesota Twins.
Butler's two-out single with the bases loaded scored two runs,
making it 4-1 for Kansas City, while Perez topped off the inning
with a two-run triple to left-center.
Twins right-hander Phil Hughes (14-9) limited the Royals (74-58) to
two singles the first seven innings.

Rays 3, Orioles 1
Tampa Bay left-hander Drew Smyly allowed just one run on two hits
over seven innings in leading the Rays to a victory over the
Baltimore Orioles.
Smyly (9-10), who was acquired last month in the three-team trade
that sent left-hander David Price to the Detroit Tigers, struck out
six and walked one while throwing 87 pitches.
Davis hit his 23rd home run of the season for the Orioles (75-56).

Phillies 8, Nationals 4
Pinch hitter Grady Sizemore hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the
sixth inning and the Philadelphia Phillies exploded for six runs in
their final three at-bats to beat the Washington Nationals.
Marlon Byrd and shortstop Jimmy Rollins also homered for the
Phillies, who completed a three-game sweep of the National League
East leaders.
Center fielder Denard Span had a single, a double and a homer for
the Nationals (75-57).

Rangers 12, Mariners 4
The Seattle Mariners' decision to give ace Felix Hernandez some
extra rest might pay off by the time he takes the mound for Friday
night's game against the red-hot Washington Nationals, but it sure
came back to bite them in a loss to Texas.
The Rangers tagged stand-in starter Erasmo Ramirez for 10 runs, with
Rougned Odor hitting a grand slam while Tomas Telis and Leonys
Martin added three RBIs apiece for Texas (52-80).
Seattle fell to 72-60.

Braves 3, Mets 2
Right fielder Jason Heyward homered on the third pitch of the game
and right-hander Julio Teheran allowed just three hits in 6 1/3
innings as the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets.
The win snapped a string of three losses for the Braves (69-64).
Teheran (13-9) gave up one run and walked two while striking out
four.

Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 2
Pinch-hitter Danny Valencia hit a three-run homer and right-hander
Marcus Stroman pitched into the eighth inning as the Toronto Blue
Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox.
Jose Bautista hit a solo homer as the Blue Jays (67-66) salvaged the
finale of the three-game series and snapped their string of four
straight extra-inning games.

Reds 7, Cubs 5
Chicago Cubs right fielder Jorge Soler sparkled in his Major League
debut but a solid seven innings by Mat Latos and a pinch-hit home
run by Chris Heisey lifted the Cincinnati Reds to victory.
Skip Schumaker went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for
Cincinnati (64-69), who improved to 10-5 this season against the
Cubs.
Soler homered in his first career at-bat and finished 2-for-4 with
two RBIs on his much-anticipated debut.

White Sox 3, Indians 2
Hector Noesi outdueled Corey Kluber and the Chicago White Sox put a halt
to a season-high seven-game losing streak with a win over the Cleveland
Indians.
Noesi (8-9) allowed two runs and struck out five in seven innings, while
Kluber (13-8) took his second straight loss.
Rookie first baseman Jose Abreu went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the
White Sox (60-72).

Yankees 8, Tigers 4
Rookie Shane Greene tamed Detroit on five hits over seven innings and
New York pummeled David Price for nine straight hits in an eight-run
third inning that helped the Yankees gain a victory over the Tigers.
New York (69-62) drilled Price (12-10) for eight runs in the third
inning and never looked back.
Detroit fell to 71-60.

Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 1
Los Angeles left-hander Clayton Kershaw pitched eight effective innings
to become the first 16-game winner in the Major Leagues, leading the
Dodgers to victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Kershaw (16-3) gave up one unearned run on six hits and two walks while
striking out 10. He retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced, and he
lowered his ERA to a major-league-best 1.73.
Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 38th save for the
Dodgers (76-58).

Angels 6, Marlins 1
Left-hander Hector Santiago earned his second victory as a starter this
season, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Miami Marlins.
Los Angeles (79-53), which earned its third victory in four games,
remains one game ahead of the Oakland Athletics in the American League
West.
Mike Trout hit his 30th home run to tie his career-high from his rookie
season, 2012.
Trout joined Jimmie Foxx, Ted Williams, Jose Canseco and Alex Rodriguez
as the only players in major league history to hit at least 30 homers
twice by the age of 22 or younger.

A's 5, Astros 4
Sam Fuld cracked a two-run homer as part of a ninth-inning rally and the
Oakland Athletics earned a 5-4 win over the Houston Astros.
Oakland (78-54) entered the final inning trailing 3-2 but scored three
runs to take control as they remained one game behind the first-place
Los Angeles Angels in the American League West.

Padres 3, Brewers 2 (10 innings)
Catcher Rene Rivera, who tied the game in the ninth with a solo homer,
singled home Yasmani Grandal with two outs in the bottom of the 10th to
give the San Diego Padres an extra-innings win over the Milwaukee
Brewers.
The Padres were trailing 2-1 when Rivera opened the ninth with a
381-foot homer that denied Brewers (73-60) closer Francisco Rodriguez
his 40th save.
Dale Thayer (4-3), the third Padres reliever to throw a perfect inning,
got the win.

Giants 4, Rockies 2
Catcher Buster Posey belted a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of
the ninth inning, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a victory over the
Colorado Rockies.
The win was the second in a row for the Giants, who kept pace with the
Los Angeles Dodgers in their battle for first place in the National
League West.
The Dodgers (76-58) lead the Giants (70-62) by five games.
