The measures were announced in a letter to all team owners and
come after widespread criticism and a social media firestorm that
Goodell absorbed following his handling of discipline for the
Baltimore Ravens running back.
A first offense under the new domestic violence policy calls for a
six-game suspension, while a second offense would result in a
lifetime ban.

Dallas Cowboys safety Jakar Hamilton was suspended four games for
violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.
Hamilton was recently singled out by head coach Jason Garrett for
showing improvement and maturity.

Suspended wide receiver Josh Gordon wants to play football, even if
that means prying his way into the Canadian Football League.
However, the NFL's leading receiver in 2013 needs permission from
the Cleveland Browns and clearance from the CFL, which does not test
for recreational drugs. Gordon's year-long suspension for a third
substance-abuse violation was upheld following appeal and announced
Wednesday.

The NFL fined Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning $8,258 for
taunting Houston Texans safety D.J. Swearinger, ESPN.com reported.
Sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that Manning was fined for his
actions in last Saturday's preseason game after getting in the face
of Swearinger following a 29-yard touchdown pass to Emmanuel Sanders
in the second quarter.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson would like to be a Dallas
Cowboy someday.
Peterson told Cowboys owner Jerry Jones in a June telephone call he
would like to play for the Cowboys at the end of his tenure with the
Vikings, according to ESPN's "Outside the Lines."

New York Jets cornerback Dmitri Patterson disputes the team's position
regarding his absence from last Friday's preseason game, during which
the team said it could not reach the veteran and was unaware of his
whereabouts.
"As it relates to my whereabouts and me missing for 48 hours without
being seen or heard from me or my representative is completely false,"
Patterson said in a statement delivered to beat reporters via text
