Tigers 3, Yankees 2
Alex Avila lined the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning to score
pinch runner Bryan Holaday from second base and give the Detroit
Tigers a victory over the New York Yankees.
Victor Martinez had lined a double over the shift into the right
field corner leading off the ninth against reliever Shawn Kelley and
was replaced by Holaday.
Rookie lefty Kyle Lobstein, making his first major league start and
his second appearance, allowed four hits in his six innings of work
for Detroit (72-60) who pulled within a game and a half of
first-place Kansas City.
Right-hander Hiroki Kuroda went the first seven innings for New
York, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Giants 4, Rockies 1
Right-hander Yusmeiro Petit set a Major-League record for
consecutive batters retired while pitching the San Francisco Giants
to a victory over the Colorado Rockies.
Petit (4-3), who was promoted to the starting rotation earlier this
week to fill the spot vacated by demoted right-hander Tim Lincecum,
started his streak on July 22 and continued through six subsequent
relief appearances.
He set the record of 46 successive batters, when he struck out
Rockies second baseman Charlie Culberson on a curveball in the dirt
for the second out of the third inning.
Colorado pitcher Jordan Lyles, the next batter, then ended Petit's
run when he doubled on a line drive to left field.
Mark Buehrle had the previous record of 45, set in 2009 when he was
with the Chicago White Sox.

Orioles 5, Rays 4
J.J. Hardy blooped an RBI single to short right field in the seventh
inning that gave the Baltimore Orioles a victory over the Tampa Bay
Rays.
The Orioles (76-56) stretched their American League East lead over
the Yankees (69-63) to seven games with 30 to play.
Baltimore started the winning rally when left fielder Nelson Cruz
lined a double to left field before the Rays (65-69) intentionally
walked third baseman Chris Davis to get to Hardy.

Twins 11, Royals 5
Second baseman Brian Dozier and left fielder Jordan Schafer each
drove in two runs in a six-run 10th inning as the Minnesota Twins
toppled the Kansas City Royals.
Left-hander Tommy Milone, who is winless in four Minnesota starts
since being acquired in a July 31 trade with Oakland, left after
5-1/3 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks.
He left with a 5-4 lead, but the bullpen failed to hold it.

Braves 6, Mets 1
Left-hander Mike Minor allowed four hits in seven-plus innings and
contributed to two run-scoring innings by the Atlanta Braves in a
win over the New York Mets.
The Braves remained 1-1/2 games behind San Francisco in the race for
the National League's second wild card.

Reds.

Astros 4, Rangers 2
Collin McHugh produced his sixth consecutive start allowing two or fewer
earned runs, leading the Houston Astros to a win over the Texas Rangers.
McHugh (7-9) improved to 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA in August, allowing two
runs and eight hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.

Indians 3, White Sox 2
The Cleveland Indians are headed to Kansas City on a high note after
beating the Chicago White Sox.
Carlos Carrasco pitched 6-2/3 strong innings and struck out seven for
the win, allowing one run and four hits, and right-handed closer Cody
Allen got four outs for his 18th save.
The Indians now head to a big series against the Royals, who are on top
of the American League Central and lead third-place Cleveland by 5-1/2
games.

Angels 4, Athletics 3 (10 innings)
Howie Kendrick's sacrifice fly to right field drove home Albert Pujols
in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Los Angeles Angels to a 4-3
win over the Oakland A's.
The win moved the Angels (80-53) two games ahead of the A's (78-55) in
the American League West, matching their biggest lead of the season.
Each team has 29 games remaining, including six more against each other.
Pujols got the winning rally started with a leadoff walk against Oakland
right-hander Ryan Cook, and went to third on left fielder Josh
Hamilton's single to center. (Compiled by Jahmal Corner; Editing by John
