Police responded to the scene around 1:40 a.m. ET and found
the 49-year-old suspect with knife in hand, the New York Police
Department said in a statement, giving the address as 770
Eastern Parkway, the world headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch
movement.
Officers demanded that he drop the knife, which he did, before
picking it back up and moving toward the officers. An officer
shot once, hitting the man in his torso and fatally wounding
him.
The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced
dead. The victim, a 22-year-old male who was stabbed in the left
temple, was in stable condition at the same hospital, police
said.
The knife was recovered at the scene and the investigation into
the incident is ongoing. None of the officers were injured
during the incident, police said.
