OF Carlos Peguero was released by the Royals on Dec. 19. Peguero,
27, appeared in only four games for Kansas City last season, going
2-for-9 with an RBI. He hit .266/.349/.563 with 30 homers and 76
RBIs in 104 games for Triple-A Omaha. Peguero spent parts of the
2011-13 seasons with the Mariners. He has a career .196/.245/.379
major league hitting line with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 69 games.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Gomes, Brandon
RHP Brandon Gomes, who would have been arbitration-eligible this
winter, was designated for assignment by the Rays on Dec. 19. Gomes,
30, went 2-2 with a 3.71 ERA in 29 relief appearances for Tampa Bay
last season. In 27 games for Triple-A Durham, he finished 0-2 with a
3.62 ERA.

MLB Note - Tampa Bay Rays Souza, Steven
OF Steven Souza Jr. is headed from the Nationals to the Rays as part
of a three-team, 11-player deal finalized Dec. 19. Souza, 25, gained
a bit of fame for his diving catch that saved RHP Jordan
Zimmermann's no-hitter in September. He struggled at the plate for
Washington (.130/.231/.391, two homers, two RBIs in 21 games), but
he hit well for Triple-A Syracuse (.350/.432/.590 with 18 homers and
75 RBIs in 96 games). Souza could emerge as a regular outfielder in
Tampa Bay.

LHP Travis Ott is headed from the Nationals to the Rays as part of a
three-team, 11-player deal finalized Dec. 19. Ott, 19, finished 1-4
with a 3.93 ERA in a combined 13 starts between short-season Class A
and low Class A last season.

MLB Note - San Francisco Giants McGehee, Casey
3B Casey McGehee was acquired by the Giants from the Marlins on Dec.
20 in exchange for minor league RHPs Luis Castillo and Kendry
Flores. McGehee, 32, was selected the NL Comeback Player of the Year
in October after batting .287/.355/.357 with four homers and 76 RBIs
in 160 games for Miami this year. He spent the 2013 season in Japan.

RHP Luis Castillo and RHP Kendry Flores were acquired by the Marlins
from the Giants in exchange for 3B Casey McGehee on Dec. 20.

appearances for low Class A Augusta last season.

C Ryan Lavarnway, designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Dec.
10, was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Dec. 19. Chicago acquired
him off waivers the Red Sox on Dec. 5. Lavarnway, 27, went 0-for-10
in nine games for Boston this year. In parts of four seasons with
the Red Sox, he hit .201/.249/.315 with five homers and 34 RBIs in
97 games.

RHP Joe Ross is headed from the Padres to the Nationals as part of a
three-team, 11-player deal finalized Dec. 19. Ross, 21, split last

MLB Note - Detroit Tigers Mercedes, Melvin
RHP Melvin Mercedes, designated for assignment by the Tigers on Dec.
11, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Toledo on Dec.
19. Mercedes, 24, pitched two hitless, scoreless innings in his long
major league appearance this year. He finished 0-3 with three saves
and a 4.92 ERA in 46 relief appearances for Toledo.

MLB Note - Washington Nationals Turner, Trea
SS Trea Turner is headed from the Padres to the Nationals as part of
a three-team, 11-player deal finalized Dec. 19. Turner will be a
"player to be named," as he can't be officially traded until June,
one year after the Padres made him a first-round pick out of North
Carolina State.
Turner, 21, hit a combined .323/.406/.448 with five homers, 24 RBIs
and 23 stolen bases in on 69 games in the low minors this year. He
was considered on the Padres' top prospects.

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Myers, Wil
OF Wil Myers was the centerpiece of a three-team, 11-player deal
finalized Dec. 19, and he moves from the Rays to the Padres.
Myers was one of the top prospects in baseball when he was acquired
by the Rays from the Royals in the December 2012 deal that sent
right-hander James Shields to Kansas City. He hit .293 with a .354
on-base percentage, a .478 slugging percentage, 13 homers and 53
RBIs in 88 games in 2013, and he won AL Rookie of the Year. Last
season, he batted .222/.294/.320 with six homers and 35 RBIs in 87
games. Myers was held back in 2014 by wrist injuries, a right wrist
fracture that sidelined him for nearly half the season and a nagging
left wrist injury that may have led to some of his early offensive
struggles.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Watkins, Logan
INF Logan Watkins was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Dec.
19 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired 1B/OF
Shane Peterson. Watkins, 25, hit .246/.269/.338 with one homer and
six RBIs in 31 games for Chicago last season. He batted
.256/.327/.364 with four homers and 38 RBIs in 103 games for
Triple-A Iowa.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Roach, Donn
RHP Donn Roach was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Dec. 19
to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed RHP Jason
Motte. Roach, 25, was claimed off waivers by the Cubs from Padres in
November. He made the Padres' Opening Day bullpen last season and
recorded a 4.75 ERA in 16 games. He was optioned at midseason to
Triple-A El Paso, where he went 4-6 with a 5.24 ERA in 19 games.

MLB Note - Texas Rangers Rowen, Ben
RHP Ben Rowen, designated for assignment by the Rangers on Dec. 16,
was released by Texas three days later. Rowen, 26, had no decisions
and a 4.15 ERA in eight relief appearances for the Rangers last
season. He finished 3-0 with five saves and a 3.45 ERA in 34
appearances for Triple-A Round Rock.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Angels O'Malley, Shawn
OF Shawn O'Malley was released by the Angels on Dec. 19 to clear
room on the roster for newly acquired INF Johnny Giavotella.
O'Malley, 26, went 3-for-16 (.188) with one RBI in 11 games for Los
Angeles last season. He hit .317/.400/.464 with four homers and 47
RBIs in 103 games for three teams in the Angels' farm system in
2014.

MLB Note - Boston Red Sox Hanigan, Ryan
C Ryan Hanigan was acquired by the Red Sox from the Padres in
exchange for 3B Will Middlebrooks on Dec. 20. A day earlier, Hanigan
was dealt from Tampa Bay to San Diego in a three-team, 11-player
trade. Hanigan, 34, hit .218/.318/.324 with five homers and 34 RBIs
in 84 games for the Rays last season.

LHP Jose Castillo is headed from the Rays to the Padres as part of a
three-team, 11-player deal finalized Dec. 19. Castillo, 18, appeared

City last season. In 114 games with Triple-A Omaha, he batted
.308/.373/.440 with seven homers, 61 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.

RHP Brian Broderick was acquired by the Royals from the Angels in
exchange for INF Johnny Giavotella on Dec. 19. Broderick, 28, spent
last season in an independent minor league. His lone major league
experience was 11 relief appearances with the Nationals in 2011,
when he went 0-1 with a 6.57 ERA.

MLB Note - San Diego Padres Morrow, Brandon
RHP Brandon Morrow signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the
Padres on Dec. 19. He could receive an additional $5.5 million if he
is healthy enough to remain in the major league rotation all season.
Morrow is hoping to make a comeback after he missed 64 games in 2012
with an oblique injury, 107 games with a strained right forearm in
2013, and another 107 games last year due to a finger injury.

LHP Juan Pablo Oramas, designated for assignment by the Padres on
Dec. 16, was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays on Dec. 19.

starts) in Double-A and Triple-a last season.

92 RBIs in 133 games for Triple-A New Orleans last season.

MLB Note - Los Angeles Dodgers Rollins, Jimmy
SS Jimmy Rollins was dealt from the Phillies to the Dodgers in
exchange for two minor league pitchers in a deal that was finalized
Dec. 19. Rollins, 36, is a three-time All-Star shortstop who won the
National League MVP in 2007.
Rollins batted .243/.323/.394 with 17 home runs, 55 RBIs and 28
stolen bases last season. He is headed into the final season of his
contract, and he will take over in Los Angeles for Hanley Ramirez,
who left as a free agent to sign with Boston.

MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Windle, Tom
LHP Tom Windle and RHP Zach Eflin were acquired by the Phillies from
the Dodgers for SS Jimmy Rollins in a trade that was finalized Dec.
19.
Windle, 22, went 12-8 with a 4.26 ERA in 26 games (25 starts) for
high Class A Rancho Cucamonga last season.

MLB Note - Philadelphia Phillies Eflin, Zach
RHP Zach Eflin, dealt from the Padres to the Dodgers in the Dec. 18
trade that sent OF Matt Kemp to San Diego on Dec. 18, was traded
again the next day. Eflin and LHP Tom Windle went to Philadelphia in
a deal that sent SS Jimmy Rollins to Los Angeles.
Eflin, 20, went 10-7 with a 3.80 ERA in 24 starts for high Class A
Lake Elsinore last season. He was the 33rd overall pick in the 2012
draft.

MLB Note - San Francisco Giants Peavy, Jake
RHP Jake Peavy and the Giants agreed to a two-year, $24 million free
agent deal on Dec. 20. Peavy, 33, was acquired in a July trade with
the Red Sox, and he was a key contributor for San Francisco down the
stretch. In 12 starts for the Giants, he went 6-4 with a 2.17 ERA.
In the postseason, Peavy went 1-2 with a 6.19 ERA in four starts,
losing twice in the World Series.

MLB Note - New York Yankees Claiborne, Preston
RHP Preston Claiborne was designated for assignment by the Yankees
on Dec. 19 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired
RHP Gonzalez Germen. Claiborne, 26, went 3-0 with a 3.00 ERA over 21
innings in 18 relief appearances for the Yankees last season.

MLB Note - Oakland Athletics Punto, Nick
UT Nick Punto was released by the A's on Dec. 19 to clear to roster
space. By letting the 36-year-old veteran go, the A's will be
responsible for his $2.75 million salary in 2015. Punto played in 73
games last year for the A's and batted .207 with two home runs and
14 RBIs. He is a career .245 hitter in 14 major league seasons.

MLB Note - Kansas City Royals Rios, Alex
OF Alex Rios and the Royals finalized a one-year, $11 million
contract on Dec. 19. The deal also has a mutual option for 2016.
Rios is expected to take over in right field for Nori Aoki. The deal
calls for Rios to make $9.5 million in 2015. The 2016 option is for
$12.5 million or a $1.5 million buyout.
Rios, 33, hit .280 with four home runs and 54 RBIs in 131 games for
the Rangers last season. The Royals are hoping for an offensive
boost from Rios in their lineup next year. He became a free agent
when the Rangers declined his $13.5 million club option for 2015.
Ankle and thumb injuries plagued Rios in 2014. While splitting time
with the Rangers and Chicago White Sox in 2013, he hit .278 with 18
homers and 108 RBIs.

MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Hart, Corey
1B Corey Hart signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Pirates
on Dec. 19. Hart, a right-handed hitter, is expected to platoon with
left-handed slugger Pedro Alvarez, who is moving from third base to
first. Hart, 32, hit .203 with six home runs and 21 RBI in 68 games
in an injury-plagued campaign for the Mariners last season. He
became a free agent in October when he refused a minor league
assignment. Hart, an All-Star with the Brewers in 2008 and 2010, is
a career .271 hitter.

MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Guilmet, Preston
RHP Preston Guilmet was designated for assignment by the Pirates on
Dec. 19, clearing a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed 1B
Corey Hart. Guilmet, 27, was acquired by the Pirates from the
Orioles on Oct. 3 in exchange for cash. He went 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA
in 10 appearances for Baltimore last season.

MLB Note - Pittsburgh Pirates Lindblom, Josh
RHP Josh Lindblom, designated for assignment by Pittsburgh on Dec.
12, was released Dec. 19. The Pirates claimed him off waivers from
the A's on Dec. 8. Lindblom, 27, allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings
last season in his lone major league appearance. He went 4-3 with a
5.79 ERA in 17 games (16 starts) for Triple-A Sacramento.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Motte, Jason
RHP Jason Motte and the Cubs finalized a one-year contract worth
$4.5 million on Dec. 19. The deal includes an additional $3 million
in performance bonuses. Motte, a 32-year-old reliever, struggled
last season as he recovered from Tommy John surgery, which forced
him to miss the entire 2013 season. Before being injured, Motte was
one of the National League's most dominant closers with the St.
Louis Cardinals. Between 2010-2012, Motte posted a 2.43 ERA. He had
his best season in 2012, saving 42 games.

MLB Note - Chicago Cubs Ross, David
C David Ross agreed to a two-year, $5 million deal with the Cubs on
Dec. 19. Ross, 37, will be reunited with his former Boston
batterymate, LHP Jon Lester, who recently signed with the Cubs. Ross
has a .233 career average with six teams over 13 seasons. He batted
.184/.260/.368 with seven homers and 15 RBIs in 50 games for the Red
Sox last season.
