[February 11, 2014]  (The Sports Xchange) — Major League Baseball player notes:

Cleveland Indians: Brantley, Michael

LF Michael Brantley and the Indians avoided arbitration in a big way. He agreed to a four-year, $25 million contract that includes an $11 million option for 2018, multiple media outlets reported Feb. 10.

When the sides exchanged figures in arbitration last month, Brantley asked for a $3.8 million salary for 2014, and the team countered with a $2.7 million offer.

Brantley, 26, set career highs last season with 10 homers, 73 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. He batted .283 with a .332 on-base percentage and a .396 slugging percentage, all better than his career hitting line of .277/.320/.382.

Washington Nationals: Clippard, Tyler

RHP Tyler Clippard and the Nationals avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a contract Feb. 10. While the team did not announce the terms, multiple media outlets reported that the sides settled on a one-year, $5,875,000 deal.

The 28-year-old reliever asked for $6.35 million and the Nationals countered with a $4.45 million offer when the sides previously exchanged arbitration figures.

Clippard, the Nationals' setup man, went 6-3 with a 2.41 ERA in 71 innings last year. He struck out 73 and walked 23. Clippard recorded 32 saves in 2012 but none in 2013.

Miami Marlins: Roe, Chaz

RHP Chaz Roe, who refused the Rangers' outright assignment to the minor leagues on Feb. 5, he signed a minor league contract with the Marlins a day later. Miami invited him to its major league spring camp. Roe, 27, went 1-0 with a 4.03 ERA in 21 major league appearances for Arizona last season. The Rangers claimed him off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Nov. 1.

Texas Rangers: Hanson, Tommy

RHP Tommy Hanson agreed to a minor league deal with the Rangers on Feb. 10, and he received an invitation to the team's major league spring camp. Hanson, 27, went 4-3 with a 5.42 ERA in 15 games (13 starts) for the Angels last year, and Los Angeles non-tendered him in December. He is expected to challenge for a spot in Texas' rotation.
