HSLC chili fundraiser, Legion Auxiliary Unit 263, Oasis sale of Rusty's equipment, genealogy speaker, blood drives

[February 15, 2014]  HSLC annual chili fundraiser to be Feb. 22

The Humane Society of Logan County will host their annual chili and vegetable soup luncheon on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Friendship Manor, 925 Primm Road. Serving will be from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

The luncheon benefits the programs of the Humane Society of Logan County

The ticket price includes chili or vegetable soup, hot dog, homemade dessert, and beverage. A hot dog meal will be available at a reduced price. Carryouts will be available.

The public is invited to support the work of the HSLC mission statement and learn about happenings at the organization's shelter that aids the abused, neglected and abandoned animals of Logan County.

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 263 to meet Feb. 19

The American Legion Women's Auxiliary Unit 263 will meet in the Mary Pat Room at the Legion on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. for their monthly meeting.

Oasis to sell equipment from Rusty's

The Oasis, incorporated as Senior Citizens of Logan County, will sell equipment and accessories from the former Rusty's restaurant on-site at 2810 Woodlawn Road.

The inspection and bid process will be two days: Monday, Feb. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon and Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Proceeds from this sale will go to assist in the redevelopment of the restaurant into the new Oasis Senior Center.

Mary Kelley to speak at Feb. 17 genealogy meeting

Mary Kelley, clerk of the Logan County Circuit Court, will be the guest speaker at the Feb. 17 meeting of the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society. Mrs. Kelley will share information on the resources available through her office to aid in genealogical work.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be at the LCGHS Research Center, 114 N. Chicago St. in Lincoln.

Give blood and help save lives

PEORIA — Like a hospital emergency room, the American Red Cross must be prepared to provide blood for patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year. It's the blood already on the shelves and readily available that can be lifesaving for people like Chris Salinas

Salinas was a horse trainer who was seriously injured in an accident when a horse pinned him to the pavement. He and his family said they credit the multiple blood transfusions he received with helping him recover.

Type O-negative blood is especially needed right now. O-negative is the universal blood type and can potentially be transfused to patients with any type.

To help ensure the shelves are stocked for patients in need, the Red Cross has scheduled two upcoming blood donation opportunities in Logan County:

• Feb. 19, noon-5 p.m., at the Lincoln Park District sports complex, 1400 Primm Road in Lincoln, Ill.

• Feb. 27, 9 a.m.-1 p.m., at Hartsburg-Emden Jr.-Sr. High School, 400 W. Front St. in Hartsburg

How to donate blood

To make an appointment to donate blood, or for more information, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver's license, or two other forms of identification, are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements
