Public invited to Iota Chi Trivia Night fundraiser

[February 21, 2014]  The Iota Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is hosting a Trivia Night contest and fundraiser on Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m., at the Meyer-Evans Student Center on the Lincoln College campus. The event is open to the public and everyone is invited to participate. Proceeds from this year's event will support Iota Chi's chapter initiatives, most notably, Special Olympics of Logan County.

The cost is just $10 per person to enter, with a maximum of eight people per team. A $100 cash prize will be awarded to the winning team. In addition to the trivia contest, the event will feature a silent auction and a 50-50 cash drawing.

John Malone, WLNX-FM station manager and assistant professor of broadcasting, will serve as master of ceremonies.

Iota Chi will provide free popcorn. The college snack bar will open at 6 p.m., with items for purchase including burgers, fries, cheese sticks, beverages and other tasty treats.

Brittany Meador, a sophomore from Lincoln, is chapter president for Iota Chi. When asked about the importance of the fundraiser, she responded: "Our chapter is excited about making a donation to Special Olympics of Logan County outside of the funds raised by Lincoln College's Polar Plunge team. We hope everyone will enjoy a fun-filled night of trivia while contributing to a wonderful cause!"

The chapter has been participating in the Honors in Action research project initiated by Phi Theta Kappa headquarters to investigate the "Culture of Competition" (PDF). The chapter chose to examine the benefits of Special Olympics, and most important, the way the competitions enhance the lives of the athletes involved. As a result of their research, chapter members have committed to making yearly donations to Special Olympics of Logan County in addition to participating in the Polar Plunge.

Phi Theta Kappa is the premier national honor society for junior colleges, and Iota Chi has recently completed four of five stars available to quality chapters.
