[February 24, 2014]  (The Sports Xchange) — Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel confirmed Sunday that he has ample speed, perhaps enough to override concerns about his 5-foot-11 frame.

Manziel ran 4.63 seconds in the 40-yard dash and on his second attempt clocked 4.56 at the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

His official time will likely put him in the same range with several top quarterbacks in recent years, including Andrew Luck, Cam Newton and Colin Kaepernick.

Luck was clocked at 4.66 and 4.59 and Newton's time was 4.59. Kaepernick's official 40-time was 4.53.

Manziel was thought to be faster by a wide margin than the two other candidates to be the top quarterback drafted in May. Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater did not run. Central Florida's Blake Bortles was timed unofficially at 4.8.

The San Francisco 49ers are close to agreeing on a contract to keep wide receiver Anquan Boldin, according to multiple reports.

It was reported last week that the two sides wanted to get a deal done before free agency begins on March 11.

Boldin, 33, is coming off a season in which he made 85 receptions for 1,179 yards with seven touchdowns.

After contemplating retirement, San Diego Chargers center Nick Hardwick decided to return for his 11th season.

Hardwick has one year remaining on his three-year deal.

Hardwick sustained a concussion during the Chargers' playoff win against the Cincinnati Bengals in January and dealt with recurring neck stingers during the season.
