(The Sports Xchange) —
Toronto Blue Jays:
Getz, Chris
2B Chris Getz, who was non-tendered by the Royals in December,
signed minor league deal with Blue Jays on Jan. 20. Getz, 30, opened
last season as Kansas City's starting second baseman, but injuries
and a puny offense caused him to lose that job. He hit
.220/.288/.273 with one homer and 18 RBIs in 78 games last year.
Milwaukee Brewers: Overbay, Lyle
1B Lyle Overbay signed a minor league contract with the Brewers on
Jan. 20, and he will compete with 1B/3B Mark Reynolds for playing
time in spring training. Overbay, 36, hit .240/.295/.393 with 14
homers and 59 RBIs in 142 games for the Yankees in 2013, filling in
most of the season for injured 1B Mark Teixeira.
SS Derek Jeter resumed baseball activities Jan. 20 by hitting
off a tee in a batting cage and fielding 108 grounders at the
team's minor league complex in Tampa, Fla.
Jeter, 39, is coming off a season in which he batted just .190
in only 63 at-bats with eight runs, one double, one home run and
seven RBIs over 17 games. He spent four stints on the disabled
list last year and missed 145 games, mainly recovering from a
broken ankle sustained in the 2012 playoffs.
