LHP Aroldis Chapman and the Reds avoided arbitration, agreeing to
a one-year, $5 million contract on Jan. 28. Chapman requested $5.4
million and the club offered $4.6 million in filing for arbitration,
and the two sides met at the midpoint. Chapman went 4-5 with a 2.54
ERA with 38 saves in 68 appearances last year. He struck out 112
batters in 63 2/3 innings.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Puig, Yasiel
OF Yasiel Puig had a charge of reckless driving dropped by the
Florida state attorney's office on Jan. 28. However, Puig still
received a speeding ticket for allegedly driving 110 mph in 70 mph
zone in Dec. 28. It was the second time during 2013 that he ticketed
for allegedly driving in excess of 95 mph, and he subsequently
decided to give up driving.
Los Angeles Angels: Pena, Carlos
1B Carlos Pena signed a minor league deal with the Angels on Jan.
28, and he was invited to spring training. Pena, 35, played for the
Astros and the Royals last season, hitting a combined .207/.321/.346
with eight homers and 25 RBIs in 89 games. Since hitting at least 30
homers and driving in at least 100 runs each season from 2007-09, he
has averaged 21 homers and 62.5 RBIs the past four seasons.

Los Angeles Angels: Boesch, Brennan
OF Brennan Boesch signed a minor league deal with the Angels on Jan.
28 and was invited to spring training. Boesch, 28, was released by
the Detroit Tigers after 2012, and he signed a $1.5 million deal
with the New York Yankees, but he battled a shoulder injury and
played in only 23 games, hitting .275 with three homers and eight
RBIs before being released last July 19. He hit .200 in 37 plate
appearances for the Yankees' Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre
affiliate.
