RHP Scott Baker signed a minor league
contract with the Mariners on Jan. 29, and he was invited to spring
training. Baker would receive a $1 million salary if he makes the team,
and he could collect up to $3.25 million in performance bonuses. Baker sat out the 2012 season and a majority of 2013 after
undergoing Tommy John elbow surgery. He returned to make three
starts in September for the Chicago Cubs and posted a 3.60 ERA with
no record in 15 innings.
Baker spent the majority of his major league career with the
Minnesota Twins, logging a 63-48 record with a 4.16 ERA in 166
career games, including 162 starts, from 2005 to 2011.
Betancourt, Yuniesky
INF Yuniesky Betancourt is headed for Japan, signing a guaranteed
one-year contract with the Orix Buffaloes of the Pacific League. The
31-year-old played first and third base last year for the Brewers,
batting .212 with 13 home runs and 46 RBIs in 409 plate appearances.
Betancourt also played for the Seattle Mariners from 2005 to 2009
and the Kansas City Royals in 2009-10 and 2012.
Retired player: Berkman, Lance
DH/1B Lance Berkman, after dealing with knee problems over much of
his 15-year major league career, announced his retirement Jan. 28.
The 37-year-old was limited to 105 games over the last two seasons
because of injuries, including just 73 games for the Texas Rangers
last year. He has had five surgeries and various other issues with
his knees over the years.
During his career, he made the National League All-Star team six
times and was a member of five playoff teams, including the 2011 St.
Louis Cardinals, who won the World Series.
Kansas City Royals: Peguero, Carlos
OF Carlos Peguero, designated for assignment by the Mariners on Jan.
16, was traded to the Royals on Jan. 28 for a player to be named or
cash. Peguero, 26, played just two major league games for Seattle
last season, going 2-for-6 with a home run. He spent the bulk of the
year with Triple-A Tacoma, hitting .260/.321/.460 with 19 homers and
83 RBIs in 118 games. Over parts of three seasons with the Mariners,
Peguero batted .195/.242/.380 with nine homers and 27 RBIs in 65
games.

Kansas City Royals: Teaford, Everett
LHP Everett Teaford was designated for assignment by the Royals on
Jan. 28 to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired OF
Carlos Peguero. Teaford, 29, allowed one hit and no runs in
two-thirds of an inning in his only major league appearance last
year. Over parts of three seasons with Kansas City, he went 3-5 with
one save and a 4.25 ERA in 45 appearances (eight starts).
Albers, Andrew
LHP Andrew Albers was released by the Twins on Jan. 29, and he will
pitch this year in South Korea. Albers, 28, went 2-5 with a 4.05 ERA
in 10 starts for Minnesota last season.
Texas Rangers: Figueroa, Pedro
LHP Pedro Figueroa, claimed off waivers by the Rays from the A's in
early January, changed teams again in late January. The Rangers
claimed him off waivers Jan. 29, six days after Tampa Bay designated
him for assignment. Figueroa, 27, allowed four runs in three innings
over five relief appearances for Oakland last year. Over two
seasons, he had no decisions and a 4.38 ERA in 24 outings with the
A's.
Texas Rangers: Roe, Chaz
RHP Chaz Roe was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Jan. 29
to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for newly acquired LHP Pedro
Figuero. Roe, 27, went 1-0 with a 4.03 ERA in 21 major league
appearances for Arizona last season. The Rangers claimed him off
waivers from the Diamondbacks on Nov. 1.
Cincinnati Reds: Nelson, Chris
INF Chris Nelson, who played for three major-league teams in 2013,
signed a minor league contract with the Reds on Jan. 28. Nelson hit
.301 in 111 games for the Rockies in 2012, but he slipped to .227 in
2013 while playing for the Rockies, Yankees and Angels.
