[July 19, 2014]  July 18 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Friday's Major League Baseball Games

Red Sox 5, Royals 4

Rookie third baseman Xander Bogaerts and pinch-hitter Jonny Gomes both hammered two-run homers in the sixth inning as Boston charged from behind for a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

Outfielder Brock Holt drove in the other Boston run with a second-inning single.

Yankees 4, Reds 3

Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help the New York Yankees to a 4-3 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.

Center fielder Ellsbury, designated hitter Carlos Beltran and catcher Brian McCann were a combined 5-for-12 with four RBIs.

Shortstop Derek Jeter also had two hits giving him 3,410 for his career, moving him nine behind Carl Yastrzemski for seventh place on the all-time list.

Brayan Pena hit two solo home runs for the Reds.

Brewers 4, Nationals 2

Milwaukee starting pitcher Kyle Lohse outdueled Washington's Stephen Strasburg and solo home runs from second baseman Scooter Gennett and left fielder Khris Davis sparked the Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the Nationals.

The Brewers (54-43) retained first place in the National League Central over St. Louis with the victory.

Lohse (10-4) joined Wily Peralta as Milwaukee's second 10-game winner thanks to a seven-inning effort in which he scattered 10 hits but walked none and allowed just one run.

Rangers 5, Blue Jays 1

J.P. Arencibia hit a three-run homer against his former team and Yu Darvish pitched into the seventh inning as the Texas Rangers snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

Third baseman Adrian Beltre also homered for the Rangers, and second baseman Rougned Odor had three hits, including a double and an RBI triple.

Darvish (9-5) allowed five hits, three walks and one run while equaling his season high with 12 strikeouts.

Giants 9, Marlins 1

Left-hander Madison Bumgarner pitched six strong innings, and the San Francisco Giants offense broke out in a 9-1 win over the Miami Marlins.

Bumgarner (11-7) allowed four hits, two walks and one run, striking out seven with his only blemish a solo homer by Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, his NL leading 22nd of the season.

Shortstop Brandon Crawford hit an early two-run homer for the Giants who then broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning, including a three-run homer by third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Braves 6, Phillies 4

Right-hander Ervin Santana, supported by a string of two-out hits as the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-4.

Santana (8-6) pitched six innings and allowed four runs, three of them earned, on six hits. He walked three and had only one strikeout, but was backed up by two double plays and some timely offensive support.

Nine of Atlanta's 10 hits came with two outs.

Indians 9, Tigers 3

Jason Kipnis homered twice, including a three-run blast to highlight a seven-run, seventh-inning outburst, as the Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers 9-3.

Designated hitter Nick Swisher had a two-run single and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera followed Kipnis' first homer with one of his own during the Indians' highest-scoring inning of the season.

Second baseman Kipnis smacked his second homer and Swisher added an RBI double in the ninth.

Center fielder Michael Brantley supplied four hits.

Pirates 4, Rockies 2

Travis Snider's pinch-hit double broke an eighth-inning tie and lifted the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Snider laced a double past diving right fielder Carlos Gonzalez to score Walker with the go-ahead run. Third baseman Josh Harrison capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.

Sanchez and Pittsburgh right fielder Gregory Polanco had two hits each while left fielder Starling Marte drove in a pair of runs.

White Sox 3, Astros 2

Tyler Flowers produced a clutch late-inning double to drive in the winning run and lead the Chicago White Sox to a 3-2 victory over the Houston Astros.

Chicago snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning when with one out, White Sox left fielder Alejandro De Aza singled, stole second and then scored on Flowers' RBI double.

The White Sox had tied the score in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homer by Dayan Viciedo.

Rays 6, Twins 2

The Tampa Bay Rays got a solid performance on the mound from starter Alex Cobb and a pair of timely hits in a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.

Cobb pitched 5-2/3 innings to earn his fifth victory of the season, allowing the two runs on five hits, two walks and two hit batters.

Tampa third baseman Evan Longoria hit a third inning double, clearing the bases for a 3-0 lead.

Minnesota got two back in the bottom half of the inning when third baseman Trevor Plouffe homered but the Rays regained a three-run lead in the fifth as left fielder Ben Zobrist hit a two-run blast.

Cardinals 3, Dodgers 2

Matt Holliday drove in all three runs with a double and a two-run homer and starter Lance Lynn worked into the seventh inning as St. Louis edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2.

The Cardinals (53-44) stayed a game behind first-place Milwaukee, a 4-2 winner at Washington, in the National League Central.

Los Angeles (54-44) fell into a first-place tie in the NL West with San Francisco, which cruised to a 9-1 win at Miami.

Athletics 5, Orioles 4

Third baseman Josh Donaldson hit a three-run, walk-off home run, lifting the Oakland Athletics to a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

Donaldson crushed Britton's first pitch over the center field fence for his 21st home run of the season to score Left fielder Yoenis Cespedes and Brandon Moss.

Earlier Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado and second baseman Jonathan Schoop hit two-run homers, powering the Orioles to a 4-2 lead, but it disappeared in the ninth.

Diamondbacks 5, Cubs 4

Arizona first baseman Paul Goldschmidt homered and shortstop Didi Gregorius had two RBI singles as the Diamondbacks overcame a three-run deficit to grab a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Goldschmidt hit his 17th home run of the season with one out in a three-run sixth inning, when Arizona had five hits off Cubs starter Edwin Jackson and three relievers.

Right fielder Gerardo Parra hit a sacrifice fly off reliever Brian Schlitter (2-3) to tie the score at 4-4 before Gregorius' second RBI single gave reliever Eury De La Rosa (1-0) the victory.

First baseman Anthony Rizzo had two home runs and three RBIs for the Cubs.

Mets 5, Padres 4

Catcher Travis d'Arnaud singled home Curtis Granderson with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to lead the New York Mets to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres.

D'Arnaud, who also singled home Granderson in the Mets' three-run first, snapped a 4-4 tie with his full-count, opposite-field grounder past Padres first baseman Jake Goebbert. (Compiled by Ben Everill)
