Former Lincoln resident, Dr. Horacio R. Rivero (Doc), passed away Friday, July 18, 2014 in Fort Myers, Florida, at the age of 96.

Dr. Rivero was born in Havana, Cuba, on March 4, 1918, the son of Regino and Milagros (Garcia) Rivero. He married the former Janet Easley on August 17, 1979, in Lincoln, who survives as well as one son, Daniel A. Rivero, and one stepdaughter, Melinda Graber. He is also survived by 3 grandsons, Roger Bridges, Matthew and Andrew Rivero; one step granddaughter; Brittney Edwards; one great granddaughter, Alexis, one great grandson, Andrew, and two step great granddaughters, Abriana and Brooklynn

Doc was predeceased by his parents, one son, Michael A. Rivero, one daughter, Josephine Bridges, and one step grandson, Jeremy Simpson.

He attended schools in Havana, graduating from the Medical School of the University of Havana in 1945. He practiced medicine in a small town in Cuba for 3 years, then did a rotating internship at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy, New York. He became a naturalized citizen, became licensed to practice medicine in Illinois, then opened a solo practice in Mason City, Illinois, in 1951. He was commissioned in the United States Air Force in June of 1956 as a Major/Flight Surgeon, being honorably discharged in June of 1958 and was very proud of serving in the USAF.

 

Upon his discharge from the Air Force, Dr. Rivero moved to Lincoln, where he opened a medical practice at 914 Broadway, closing his office on October 31, 1984. Doc was also a staff physician at the Lincoln Developmental Center for 9 years. In April of 1995, he was inducted into the Fifty Year Club of the Illinois State Medical Society. He had served as President of the Logan County Medical Society in 1973-1974. Dr. Rivero was one of the attending Medical Staff when Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital opened in 1952.

In October of 1994, Doc and Janet moved to the Fort Myers area of Florida, where he enjoyed many years of retirement. Dr. Rivero's body will be cremated and his ashes will be buried next to his son, Michael, in Holy Cross Cemetery on September 6. Local arrangements entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln.
